Every time I want to distance certain kinds of people away from me I use some invented terms from Sartre's Le Fantastique as he just invented them for that book (which usually includes a philosophical dictionary at its back pages)

It's kind of fun but I do feel some guilt sometimes doing it. Closed terminology is the oldest trick in the book.

I see "Audiophile" as an OCD related illness. Lol. For me it's all about the sound being perfect in all ways related to the mix, master, the quality and sound of the HiFi gear in regards to clarity, openness, punch, smack, ..you named it. When it all comes together into the perfect cocktail, the audiophile then experiences their much sought after euphonic moments. If one element falls out of line, the enjoyment is canceled until that element can be tuned back in again.

Audiophile could mean many things including being out of control and having an addiction to buying audio gear regardless of just how adulterated or distorted the music winds up being.

Wouldn't it reach more minds if the words audio purist was used in it`s place ?

After all is said and listened to it`s the purity of the artists music that is the most important and should have the main stage when explaining someone who enjoys music as it was intended to be herd... ?

We could start revolution and fight back against the mainstream over lords if we could agree on a proper word to explain the simple truth.

Depends. "Phile" as a suffix has been used for many things beside types of deviant behavior. E. g. in language, "anglophile," "francophile." "Audiophile" dates back at least to the '50s when the diagnostic use wasn't as common in everyday usage.

Indeed a good example of a word or stem that used to be largely descriptive and neutral, but gained negative connotations through prolonged specific use. "Tainted" is the usual expression.
