Johny Cash American Thunder V is a pretty haunting album even though he could barely sing. Is a song made country if it is sung by a lifetime country artist but was written by Gordon Lightfoot? You tell me.
Hank Williams seemed to be in a perpetual creative fever. I particularly like some of his solo guitar recordings such as I Can't Escape from You. But who can resist Take This Message to My Mother or The Angel of Death or A Tramp On the Street? Then there are the quirky, genre bending spoken songs by his alter ego, Luke the Drifter, such as Men With Broken Hearts or A Picture From Life's Other Side which embody pathos and the dignity of the despised. They are all old so I guess they are not HiFi, but the music sure comes through. But, hey, I like Los Tres Ases, too, and Flor de Azalea by Los Panchos and El Jinete by Jorge Negrete. Is it country if the cowboy is Mexican?
There are three albums on Rounder, one of them called Live At The CMA Theater In The Country Music Hall Of Fame, perhaps that's permissible but I suspect they will nevertheless be denounced as bluegrass and or Americana.
Iiuc they use an unusual microphone technique that's well illustrated in this lovely video
I love the blurry lines. The Byrds, Gram and Emmylou, Doug Sahm, etc. Charley Crockett is one of my favorite country guys, but I like when he goes into the blur with R&B. On this one maybe he went all the way through the blur.
