Hi

How about this one for conjuring up a vision Marc Cohn Walking in Memphis full of atmosphere. Even if it was Cher that made it a hit. Marc’s is the original
, he wrote it

I’m not au fait with the nuances of Americana and country, so apologies if these guys don’t fit.

amazing musicians and very good quality recordings.

I believe the Punch Brothers definitely fit the Americana mold. I like some typical country music but love bluegrass, indie folk and Americana.

Anything with Chris Thiles is great: Nickel Creek, The Goat Rodeo Sessions, etc.

If you like the Punch Brothers check out:
  • Abigail Washburn
  • Alison Krauss
  • Angus & Julia Stone
  • Aoife O'Donovan
  • Béla Fleck
  • The Civil Wars
  • Crooked Still
  • Grace Vanderwall
  • Lera Lynn
  • The Milk Carton Kids
  • Nickel Creek
  • Nora Brown
  • Sarah Watkins
  • Sarah Jarosz
  • Sometymes Why
  • Vandaveer

I'm a big fan of Mandolin Orange. Apart from their original work they also have the honor of having the best Boots of Spanish Leather cover I've ever heard.

thanks for the suggestions, some new names there.
Angus and Julia Stone are an Aussie brother and sister, they are very well liked in Australia and their recordings are usually top notch too.

Ouch!
Reminds of of Charlie Pride, talking in Ken Burns "Country Music" about singing "Green Green Grass of Home", and reaching the line:

"And down the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries . . ."

. . . and then he whips his head around and says, "Now wait a minute."

Allison Krauss has been listed several time already, have to mention this particular album as a highlight both as Americana and as a really fine sounding recording [if this is blacked out in your region, it's "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" from the album "Forget About It"]:

Listened to Waylon Jenning's "Dreaming My Dreams" a few days go, forgot how nice the production is.

This YouTube of Joan Baez singing "Sleeper" comes from "Dark Chords on a Big Guitar", but has a better transfer than the version attached to the cover of the album. Not well known, but wonderfully produced. Sounds more like Americana than any of her other records:
