Audio stutters with USB Dacs on Macbook M1 Pro

I was experiencing really bad stuttering running Roon on Macbook Pro M1 > Roon Server on Mac Mini > Dirac Processor on Mac Mini > RME DAC.

Bumping the "Audio Buffer Size" to 2048 samples within the Dirac Processor solved the problem.
Is the Mac Mini an M1?

Thanks. It looks as if yours was a different issue than what was being discussed here.
Yeah, the models are different but same problem. Was just thinking that if anyone was running Dirac on an M1 then adjusting the buffer size might help there too.

Not to be pedantic, but it’s not really the same problem. Buffer overruns are common on all platforms and increasing the samples as you did is the usual solution. The M1/Ventura USB stutter issue is an OS bug that was triggered by high memory pressure. The only permanent solution is upgrading from Ventura to Sonoma.

It's getting worse by the day. Infortunately, I cannot upgrade because it my job's computer.

Sometimes I just wish I had a PC that worked.

I am experiencing the same issue with my Topping MX3s DAC and a Macbook Pro M1 Pro / 16GB. Its connected via USB to my Dell monitor -> Targus USB Dock -> Macbook. Audio stutters and pops every couple of seconds. A restart sometimes helps but not by much.

The Topping MX3s supports bluetooth and connecting my Macbook to the DAC via bluetooth seemed to resolve the issues for now. I would expect USB connection to be a more stable / clean than bluetooh but seems like this is a widespread issue. From what it sounds like Sonoma also fixes these issues, so hopefully once its ready for production I can revert back to the USB connection.

My DAC have same USB connection route like you.
MBP - Dell Thunderbolt HUB - Dell Monitor USB C - My DAC on Monitor USB port.
Sonoma fix the issue completely for me.

Installed the Sonoma release candidate and yes, audio seems pretty buttery. So far.

:)

If your company is anything like mine was, your IT department will block the update for a few months for no apparent reason.
They install it on a couple of test machines and test their company's security software for compatibility as well as running other common software products.
Better to fix any problems before releasing it for general usage.

Yeah I get that. The 3-4 month wait always felt a little excessive though. Being a small minority, we Mac users were never given much priority, which probably explains it.
