Audio stutters with USB Dacs on Macbook M1 Pro

Just a little postscript then.

I got the stutters again, and 18/24 GB RAM used is still in the green zone memory-pressure-wise. Click on a new page and there's that instant pause. But I happened to have the CPU view on in Activity Monitor and noticed a CPU spike. Interesting.

Of course I was reading ASR forum with a few tabs open in that window. I had another window open at dezeen.com, an architecture site. Lots of image content on their pages, but opening a new tab didn't trigger a CPU spike or result in an audio pause.

Here's a screenshot of the CPU spikes each time I hit the ASR alert menu or open a new ASR forum tab (too short duration to catch % in window, but it doesn't appear to be the steady-state % CPU you can see in the table that causes the stutter):

I get stutters when reading the news as well, and opening the guardian.com/au is similarly hard work for the M2 running Ventura. Here's the muti-core view of the CPU history:

The very first little spike you see on performance cores 5+6 only is a new Dezeen tab, by contrast both ASR (first cluster of tall spikes) and The Guardian (second cluster) saturate all the cores (opening a few tabs each, not too fast though). For some reason ASR really hits the efficiency cores, but Guardian is worst overall. It'll be interesting to compare to Sonoma when I upgrade.

Are you using Chrome or Safari for browsing? I believe Safari normally works better as far as memory and CPU while Chrome typically takes more resources?

That's with Safari. I don't actually have Chrome on my baby laptop, where I kept foreign software to a minimum. Much more stuff on my Intel iMac, but the stutters aren't a thing there, so I haven't compared browsers on this issue. Chrome certainly used to be more of a resource hog in general, but I only use it for a bit of web app testing these days.

I can't believe I have a freaking Mac M2 pro that can't play audio without stutters. An Intel M3 disposable PC works just fine.

Most of us with M2 seem not to be experiencing the problem

Can you expand - how much RAM do you have. Which DAC are you using? Does it only happen with high memory pressure? If so what are you running that consumes the memory.

What other conditions might be relevant?

M2 Pro - I moved to the Ethernet AVB interface because of this.

I work on a Chrome based environment. At any given point in time I may have +30 tabs open. This may impact audio.

My Mac is an M2. 14" Macbook Pro with an 512 SSD and 16 GB RAM.

My DAC is a Topping D10s. But I have this issue with pretty much any DAC.

I'll try to test audio with Chrome closed. It's the only app I use.

SoundSource has made available a test release that is compatible with Sonoma. I’m running it now with no issues… and no stutters. :)

I discovered something else. So roon streams perfectly fine with most stuff that I'm doing.

But when I download a zip file from Google drive playback would suddenly stop. Cpu load goes up for a moment to 80%+ and roon looses connection to the endpoint. When the download is finished everything goes back to normal.

Not a big issue since I don't download anything from Google drive usually but I'm wondering why that is.

I'm on Sonoma Beta, everything is hardwired, 1gbps to the router from MacBook, to the streamer also and I'm using a belkin Thunderbolt 2.5gbps Lan Adapter with a owc thunderbolt 4 hub and a thunderbolt 4 Nvme enclosure.

I don't do crazy upsampling In Roon and I usually only run safari with 4-5 tabs.

This usually doesn't even happen when I do really demanding stuff like extracting SACD Isos to DSD files while multitasking with browser and folders.

And Google drive doesn't max out my download speed either.

Anyone who upgraded to Sonoma beta and found that audio stuttering is gone, can you help us check if the 3.5mm jack still produces the "buzz" sound randomly? Which is also another sound-related issue on M1

Just another datapoint. I have a M1 Max with 32 GB ram. I use this for audio production and even run live shows real time processing plugins on 32 channels with low latency RME interfaces (UFX III and Digiface USB). I have never had issues with stutters on this machine in any context; even under heavy usage.

I have a work laptop that is M1 Pro with 16GB of RAM. I work as a software dev and I've given up using USB interfaces with it because I get constant drop outs and stutters. I'm running on average a dozen docker containers along with IDE, outlook, Webex, terminal etc. Memory usage is 13.53GB right now with some swap and compressed memory. Unfortunately my work requires most of this running concurrently so I just stream via a different device for music. I'm kinda disappointed that I can't use all of my fancy recording equipment for my webex calls but I guess the world has bigger problems :). I can confirm extreme audio dropouts when trying to use RME UFXII and ADI-2 pro. UFX uses RME's driver and ADI-2 uses core audio driver...

I think the issue only appear for Macbook M1 Pro chip, Mac Studio đont have the issue.

I was experiencing really bad stuttering running Roon on Macbook Pro M1 > Roon Server on Mac Mini > Dirac Processor on Mac Mini > RME DAC.

Bumping the "Audio Buffer Size" to 2048 samples within the Dirac Processor solved the problem.
