Audio by Van Alstine ABX Comparator Review

Probably not the word you meant. I think you might be looking for the principle of charity?
In this case they probably collapse to the same thing. Hence Hanlon's razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

EDIT: but looking at the Wikipedia for Hanlon's razor, I saw this amusing counterpoint:
Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.

The (very scientific) principle of parsimony would encourage you to assume a mistake or some kind of clumsiness in his methods before assuming dishonesty.
The character and track record of folks in the audiophile community who claim to have "proven" all kinds of impossible things and immediately jump to trying to separate you from your money leads me to assume dishonesty. Maybe that's unfair. AFAIK Josh is not selling something except faith in his golden ears.

Damn, Josh double down.

So, ultimately, I can hear small differences between DACs. As noted from the beginning, these are minor differences that are likely unimportant to all but the most obsessive audiophiles. This doesn’t need to be a major controversy, apart from the fact that it taps into the overheated “objectivist” versus “subjectivist” debate.

The most obvious answer is that he was listening to differing relay sounds.
Disagree. The most obvious reason is he has the most golden of ears and his system is resolving enough.

Take note that in that ASR thread, the differences that allowed successful ABX results are thought to be in the filters. In particular there is a lot of passband ripple seen. Then at the end of the thread there are straight up filter comparisions (not with DACs).

In Josh's tests, he tried to minimize filter differences as best he could (at least in the delta sigma comparisons). He used 96K recordings and sharp filters. While there still could be passband ripple differences, it would be very unlikely for that to explain how he scored nearly perfectly in all the comparisons. So Josh's test would seem to be much less of a filter comparison.

Absolutely, the principles of parsimony and charity, as well as the razors of Occam and Hanlon, all collapse to one irreducible, irrefutable point: Y'all are nerds who listen to music by reading data sheets and can't listen for yourself.

Placing my order for the dCS Varese--ahem, Varèse--as we speak.

Guess I made the right decision in never getting one of these, but was hoping for better.

I bet you could have this one for the postage. It's scrap.

Josh responded on AS saying he could not hear the mechanical sound of the relays with the IEM in his ears.
I can easily hear it without music playing with the IEM in my ears. With music playing, i can still here it but to less extent. With the latter, it is harder to distinguish the differences in the clicks.
But he did hear electrical artifacts during switching, statiac or click sound.
Indeed. Level of static is very high if you use high gain on the headphone amp and lower on the source. With no zero crossing logic for the switching, the waveforms suddenly change, causing spray of harmonics that is heard as static.

On the other hand I'm only using quiet small signal relays (Omron G6K), not the power relays the AVA uses everywhere.
Indeed. My AP has relays but they are so faint compared to the loud thunk that you get with AVA.

Not so great here imho.
A theory that doesn't work as intended in practice needs revision.
The America-specific context is that Yogi Berra was an American baseball player from the mid century who was famous for his malapropisms. They often contained a kernel of wisdom, but were frequently contradictory or absurd.

The examples here are pretty good.

Maybe it still has historic value as the notorious device at the center of comparator-gate.

No but I feel as if this review is different and has additional scrutiny and importance.
Also, given that you brought up the topic of recording I’m not sure why I’m being chastised for asking an impertinent question?
So were you expecting Amir to go out and spend $1k-$2k on a mic just for this test?

The level of entitlement in this world is out of control.

Haven't noticed anything unique about this one myself. OTOH additional scrutiny/importance is something that should be associated with test gear. How did Alstine amps measure?

The simple fact that after getting such results he didn't favor another explanation is a good clue he's got a confirmation bias.
