Audeze just announced MM-500 headphones for audio professionals. I guess it's made for mixing and mastering audio. Lighter than their popular LCD-X. MM means Manny Marroquin he is one of the best mix engineers in the world.

HD600 with planar extension sounds incredible. If I can't get a good recent set of LCD-3F used locally, the MM-500 is my next choice. Audeze's ability to have low-distortion, extended bass that's insensitive to leakage is quite unique.

Yep, but the Audeze has more bass and planar headphones have such nice bass :D

And crucially, very resistant to leakage. I moved from Dan Clark Audio to Audeze for that reason. Full extension with only slight attenuation even with glasses and a wig on the test rig! DCA has incredible ergonomics, build and industrial design but wow was it sensitive to leakage - constantly EQing a moving target and a massive roll off if you so much as place it slightly off. I own a cheap LCD-2C but am looking for a LCD-3 because of how smooth, extended and free of high-Q peaks/dips the response is. But the MM-500 has my attention and I'm waiting eagerly for the used/open box sets that will inevitably come.

Looks like averaged form four reseatings.

Dynamic driver headphones exist like that, planar is not a requirement.

Show me one that extends flat to 20Hz without a midbass bump, even with a broken seal. And I'm not talking about your subjective anecdotal experience. Show measurements.

Some planars have a roll-off in sub-bass too. I don’t think that a planar design automatically solves this.

However you’re absolutely correct about dynamic drivers, they have a resonance frequency just like regular speaker and they will naturally roll-off like one.

Not at all, I moved on from DCAs partly because of that, i was just saying Audezes handle leakage exceptionally and in a way dynamics can't seem to.

You know bass extension is a separate issues to seal dependency? Looks like you are moving the goal posts. Audeze have some closed backs which will be affected by seal, in that cases an open back DCA headphone will be more consistent.

How is bass extension separate? Break the seal and bass SPL is lower, and declines further with frequency.

>Open back DCA headphone will be more consistent

You mean something that rolls off at 700Hz? The Ether 2 has incredible seal dependence and the extension has changed. This is something not observed in the open back Audezes.

When you focus on brand vs. brand before open vs. closed there can't be that much to discuss. Anyone can cherry pick data, physics remain.

I have zero interest in closed backs and the discussion was confined to the open backs that are bread and butter for the brands involved. Data for the open backs for one brand has consistently across multiple rigs shown much more insensitivity to leakage than another brand.

By physics do you mean your intuitive layman understanding or actual study about the physics of headphones? Because the idea that "physics" means that leakage performance of open planars can be generalised despite data showing a vast difference is absurd.

Since there are no EQ profiles out yet for these, I used the measurements from Headphones (posted above) and tried to match it to the Harman target in REW. I'm sure better profiles will come out from the major players, but for now I like the result I get with this one. You can of course change whichever part you want:

Filter 1: ON LS 12dB Fc 90.00 Hz Gain 10.00 dB Filter 2: ON PK Fc 240.0 Hz Gain -1.00 dB Q 2.500 Filter 3: ON PK Fc 320.0 Hz Gain -1.00 dB Q 2.000 Filter 4: ON PK Fc 450.0 Hz Gain 1.00 dB Q 3.000 Filter 5: ON PK Fc 700.0 Hz Gain -1.00 dB Q 3.000 Filter 7: ON PK Fc 2000 Hz Gain 2.00 dB Q 2.500 Filter 8: ON PK Fc 3000 Hz Gain -1.00 dB Q 3.000 Filter 9: ON PK Fc 3500 Hz Gain -2.50 dB Q 3.000 Filter 10: ON PK Fc 4300 Hz Gain 5.00 dB Q 3.000 Filter 11: ON PK Fc 5000 Hz Gain -1.50 dB Q 4.000 Filter 12: ON HS Fc 6000 Hz Gain 2.00 dB Filter 13: ON PK Fc 11500 Hz Gain 3.00 dB Q 3.000 Filter 14: ON PK Fc 900.0 Hz Gain 1.00 dB Q 5.000 Filter 15: ON PK Fc 1225 Hz Gain -1.00 dB Q 3.000 Filter 16: ON PK Fc 2300 Hz Gain 1.00 dB Q 3.000 Filter 17: ON PK Fc 4200 Hz Gain 1.00 dB Q 3.000 Filter 18: ON PK Fc 6000 Hz Gain 1.00 dB Q 3.000

Brillant frequency response for my taste. I would probably prefer this over the Harman target. :D I tune my own headphones similarly.
What an amazing product. But 1500 is a bit much for me atm. :( Someday..

An Audeze planar with HD600/650-like tuning but without the bass roll-off? Color me excited (though I wish the 3KHz peak was less pronounced).
