Hello,

it's rare to be able to compare a cinema Atmos mix and a music Atmos mix of the same album. This is the case with Mylène Farmer's album Nevermore.
Hello,

it's rare to be able to compare a cinema mix and a music mix of the same album. This is the case with Mylène Farmer's album Nevermore.
The Dolby Atmos Music mix is available for streaming (in Dolby Digital Plus) and the Dolby Atmos Cinema mix is available on the concert's UHD video blu-ray (in Dolby Digital TrueHD).

The idea here is not to compare the difference in quality between Dolby Digital Plus and TrueHD formats, but to do so from the same basic master, with extracts of the high channels isolated to clearly hear the difference in encoding quality.

What's interesting is to see the difference in spatial distribution, particularly on the front speakers (RLC), where we can see that the music mix makes very little use of the center speaker, whereas the cinema mix makes heavy use of it to keep the voice centered whatever its place in the cinema. There is also a difference in the use of surrounds, and also of the LFE channel (not visible on the graph), which is much higher in the cinema version.

Unlike the music version, which doesn't take this criterion into account, because, as with stereo listening, it's not necessary to have a center speaker - you just need to be positioned at the same distance from both speakers. It's a different approach to listening.

In both cases, the music is still predominantly frontal.
Comparing the excerpts makes it possible to combine listening to the graphs showing the spatial distribution of the two mixes.

It's also interesting to compare the difference in orchestration and mixing of the same song of music for these last three concerts (Nevermore, Live 2019 and Timeless 2013).

Good listening,

Jean-François
