But would you care to explain, I genuinely want to know :

1. Why is it important that I understand what the measurements mean. I am not a technical person, a hifi seller, producer, nor musician, I have no financial benefit from hifi, but a music lover with hi-fi as hobby. Why should I care?

2. Whatever the connection between the measurements and the sound I hear, I would leave that to the engineers whose job it is. What benefit do I have if I understand that connection ?

If you don't care one bit about audio science, why did you join audio science review?
 
..they should only be evaluated by technical measurements.

Would you buy an amp without cheking on sound quality first? Not ever"

When you buy a microwave, do you also test it first?

Or do you look for quality materials and technical performance of the amplifier, sorry, microwave?

For example, you could determine from a component’s measurements if a ‘perceived’ difference actually might exist ie if the amplifier is actually adding audible distortion.
Many differences are perceived which in actuality do not exist.
Or if you enjoy a particular loudspeaker’s ’character’ you can use its measurements to shortlist other designs which share that feature.

Hoping to discover something new and worth of consideration, but I don't see any of it...so far.
Maybe if tone of disscusion becomes more friendly, I can squezze some benefit of it.

It all depends on you:
- Do you mind being deceived?
- Do you mind spending money, sometimes a lot of money, for absolutely no reason?
- Do you want to know what is worth upgrading and what it not?
- Do you want to spend a lot of time investigating things that are easily proven or disproven with simple measurements?
- Do you want to know how to verify if an improvement has been achieved?
- Do you want to know when you are being upsold vs advised?
- Do you want to protect yourself from snake oil type products?
 
That's the beauty of sufficient measurements and understanding them: you can see sound quality without hearing it. Just like you can see high frequency sound without being able to hear it.
No, you cannot! Measurements are always incomplete. Also there is not enough knowledge of how measurement correlate to perceived sound. Thus measurements today only is a method to weed out obviously poor quality designs. You still need to listen before making a final conclusion.
 
Source for either? Explanation? Scientifically?
Well, can you find any scientific research on how reconstruction filters in D/A processor working with 16/44.1K source influence perceived sound? You can easily measure filter amplitude and phase response, but which group of listeners would prefer specific filter and for what kind of music content?

It is debatable how much the measurements can be trusted. Measurements published today by manufacturers serve mostly for propaganda purposes. Such measurements may be incomplete and selective, in order to present the devices in the best light. Some manufacturers don't even publish any measurements at all, just the basic technical data of the device, because they are probably required by law to do so. If measurements are the essence of our relationship with devices, then we need to find an independent authority that we trust and who will do all the necessary measurements. But then, will we ever wait for the amplifier that we are particularly interested in to be measured. Or will our choice have to be narrowed down to only those amplifiers that that independent authority has already measured. In addition, even if we have fair measurements, we still won't know how an amplifier will actually perform when we plug certain speakers into it.


If I understood you correctly : suppose I have speakers, which have a certain sound character that I like (neutral sound) And then I want to get new speakers. Using the measurements from those old speakers, I'll look for new speakers that have the same measurements to get a similar sound. So the measurements should help me narrow down my search for such speakers. Sounds logical, even I find that path to be somehow strange... But when I find such a speaker, I would never buy it based on those measurements alone, but I would make sure to listen to it first to determine if it meets my requirement for a "neutral" sound. If that speaker measures neutral but fails to sound neutral to me, the case is closed, and the search continues, with or without measurements.

Yes use measurements to weed our coloured designs, personally I wouldn’t purchase speakers that do not have a full set of measurements, but many manufacturers do not provide measurements ( even those with expensive robotic measuring equipment ) .

It wasn't that long time ago you bought a pair of loudspeakers before any full set of measurements was available, it was the Palmer Orbit 11’s. The only measurement that were available at that point was a single low-res on-axis response made by Palmer themselves. ;)
 
You are correct, although I had spoken with Ollie ( Adam Hall UK) and he had actually had a chance to not only hear the Orbits but compared them directly in a studio environment to Neumann and Genelec, for the price it seemed worth a punt.
