ATC speakers / Monitors

Nothing apart from the cabinet and the price I believe.

They look great indeed, do you know what's the difference with SCM50 ? Same driver for the Low End ? I assume they're 50L as well considering the name.
just the cabinet and using a discrete instead of IC op-amp based crossover, I think.

Was that the EL150 from what twenty years ago?

The EL150 is old enough that it came with the Seas t25cf001 instead of ATC's tweeter.

(I quite like the Seas part, though personally I think the dxt waveguide would have been a good choice...)

Yes they ‘ mention the manufacturer in the description just a ‘25mm’ tweeter.

They aren’t limited production will continue after the first 50.

ATC has been very active lately, with many new models of speakers. New subwoofers, new center speakers, new on-wall speakers, and now these beautiful-looking special edition EL50 floorstanders. With the first three mentioned categories of loudspeakers, it seems like they aim to provide more options for Atmos studios.

New ATC for Bristol show, I say ‘new’ but … £50k you get a book with it.View attachment 512107
Unlike others perhaps, that's one fugly box - there was a 15" bass driver version some years back as mentioned above which to me was even more fugly!

Indeed, the enclosure would account for a HUGE part of the cost as it's almost certainly UK made! Sad that ATC are now reduced to this to make money, buty the far eastern domestic market will lap 'em up no doubt.

Below is my take on a proper ATC and before herself came into my life, I even measured up for a pair as they weren't the silly money they are now (more than triple the then cost these days) - At the time, they were available in a wood veneered enclosure with grilles, this before the pro version as pictured below. The available dynamics of the twin bass drivers and greater power from the separate large amp-box (via a Burndy connection to each speaker) was incredible. Back then in my little 80s built end-terrace house, I'd have arguably had the police round with noise complaints, as the 100As were bad enough. Them were the days half my life ago - sigh..... These days, I worry if the volume goes above quiet conversation levels...

So worse then? The great unwashed do still seem to prefer discrete circuits to properly designed chip based, don't they... As for DSP, the horror :(

I definitely prefer the look of classic-style ATC speakers, but I think you are exaggerating a lot when you call it fugly, especially when there are so many loudspeakers out there that must be considered way more ugly than that. I think it's quite good-looking in a more general sense, but I don't think it looks the way I see loudspeakers from ATC.

I think it's nice that they provide special edition models for those who are interested in such things, even if that isn't a thing for me personally, or maybe I just don't have the economy for anything like that. :)

It's a classic trick to cash on new designs, with first a very expensive limited edition and then a slightly different in looks general model that is not limited in numbers and a lot cheaper priced. They do this trick for a lot of products, even vinyl resleases with a limited edition coloured vinyl with a special cover, and then a simple black vinyl with a more basic cover. The first run becomes a collectors item that can be resold for high inflated prices...

I think DSJR is correct in that this model is primarily aimed at the middle and far east domestic markets where all-British made products still have some cachet.

And where the money is.

Competing with TAD on price, suspect TAD is objectively better though.
