Hello everyone again.
A few days ago I needed your help: I told you I had a project where I needed to record my spoken voice (narrative) and then layer that voice over an instrumental track already recorded by someone else. I explained what I had, and you gave me many good recommendations. Based on that post and those recommendations, I decided to use Audacity (I have Windows and Mac, and that program runs on both), I bought a Shure SM7B and an SSL 2+ MKII interface.
Then I made another post asking for recommendations on which effects to apply (EQ/Compressing/Limiting, etc.), and you gave me your suggestions. However, based on a response from the helpful AA63 (ASR), I realized I hadn't been specific enough with my question, so now I'll be more specific, and I need your advice. I remind you that I'm a complete beginner in this field and don't have time to learn the intricacies of sound; I just need simple and pragmatic answers, please.
This is my workflow and my question:
1 - Record my voice in Audacity (Mac or PC), reciting what I wrote (not singing).
2 - Open the instrumental background track I downloaded from the internet (I didn't record it myself) in Audacity and overlay the track I recorded with my voice on top of it.
3 - Render both and get the desired result.
My question (always remembering that what I recorded is my spoken/narrated voice, not a sung voice):
Should I apply the effects (EQ/Compressing/Limiting, etc.) to my spoken voice and then overlay it on the instrumental and render everything then, or should I apply the effects before rendering, when I combine my spoken voice (without effects) on top of the instrumental?
Thank you very much.
