AsciLab speakers are about to launch

Since it starts to fall off earlier, wouldn't 4th order crossover reduce excursion more than 6th order?
4th order does not start to fall off earlier, just not as steep as 6th order. Given the extremely low crossover point, I would prefer the steeper the better....

It’s more complex. Bl, Kms asymmetry can cancel H2 each other. And They are still very low enough.

About 24ms with linear phase.
Under 2ms with minimum phase.
Hi AsciLab,
While you haven't answered my first questions yet, I have some more :)

What is the reason for such a high lattency?
I assume with the use of FIR filters?
Have you optimized the filter to reduce the delay?

You have an interesting speakers. I enjoy everything you write and of course am grateful for such openness and providing graphs at many stages of production.
Many thanks.

Hi Ascilab,
Isn't this unnecessary?
How are you doing with the phase response? Do you use FIR and don't you have strong off-axis pre-ring with this filter order?
Can we take a look at Step Responce and off-axis Impulse Responce measurements?

Thank you
That meant A6B active version.
Passive A6B uses 4th order crossover.

Nice to see another engineering based speaker company coming with good value for money proposition.

Just my 2 cents - I have speakers with 6.5 Purifi woofer and crossover at 2000+ Hz works very well and makes the speaker to rock and funk, as the critical frequencies are handled by one driver. So it would be interesting to understand, how pretty basic tweeter handles crossover at 1kHz.
Maybe not visible in graphs, but my experience with 1 in tweeters crossed over too low was never really positive - especially with dynamic material, tonality used to fall apart. OK for casual listening, but annoying in long term.

For 4k [landed cost EU] I expect already top performance. Hope Erin will get his hands on the speaker soon.
Our 1kHz XO is quite challenging indeed. It needs durable tweeter and fine symmetry, deep waveguide loading.
Many things are matter to get smooth and clean low crossover. You can see our distortion datas. They are lower than many other high crossed speaker at crossover point.

4th order is enough to get steep slope and directivity. 6th order gets a little better but needs DSP. Analog 6th order needs too many components and occurs more DCR.

That 24ms is caused by DSP amp when it drives FIR filter. IIR filter makes only less than 2ms.
Thanks for your kind words. :)

Will there be a way to bypass the FIR for low latency applications?

Yes, indeed. And what is the benefit of going through all of this?
Genuinely asking, I understand that every speaker design is set of compromises and choices, just want to understand why do you think it is better to push tweeter to its limits and not covering 1kHz-2kHz range by woofer.

It is about two things.

First is center to center distance / wavelength. It is important to get close to point source.
Having close CTC while using low crossover makes less vertical lobbing error.
Due to low crossover, our vertical directivity is quite even.

Second is less distortion.
Using higher crossover point may look lower distortion at THD. But in real it becomes higher distortion at MD. Excursion makes doppler distortion and some of AM(amplitude modulation) and they are risen by frequency.
So lower crossover makes less MD in result.
So They show 3-way-ish multitone distortion as 2 way speaker.

That’s why we use that low frequency crossover.

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

I looked into building DIY speakers for a good while, so this all makes sense to me. Eventually I realized good distortion and good vertical directivity is pretty much impossible without a really good waveguide... even with top-notch tweeters. It's pretty impressive to get this to work, there are many very good speakers that don't.

Thanks, I noticed the A6Bs are sold out. Will they be back in stock?
We are waiting for receiving Purifi drivers.
Maybe in June A6B will be opened.

Thanks @PristineSound, already received a couple of enquires because of that article, the power of T3.
Keith

Any chance of adding Croatia to countries that you deliver to?
I'm saving up for an upgrade and the C6B will most likely be my next speaker if I could order it

.
C6C looking mighty impressive...
