AsciLab speakers are about to launch

This is amazing. I thought the speaker shape in the thumbnail was familiar. It turns out to be an interview from two years ago with Jinsung Ko and with a few people using his designs. Back then they were talking about bringing it to the international market.

Seems this is all coming to fruition. Congrats!

JSLab -> Ascilab :cool:

The design of the Ascilab website is nearly complete, and we are currently preparing to integrate the credit card payment system. It is expected to be ready for launch in 2 to 3 weeks.
Below is the planned release schedule and pricing for Ascilab. Please note that these are not final and are provided for reference only.

I can’t afford S6C (or F6BS actually) but I do have a fully functional spare kidney, you can take a bit of my liver as well to cover the postage costs.

;)

Says a lot about the Purifi woofer that you'd consider dual 8" PR for it! I guess that would potentially add a bit more output and lower distortion even more near tuning compared to the already excellent A6B numbers? That would certainly help to differentiate it even more from the A6B and other dual 6.5" PR Purifi implementations.

Yes. Larger suface of PR helps to reduce PR distortion. Dual PR keeps its very linear excursion range before the active woofer hits the Xmax.
Still considering additional option though.

What exactly do you think it says?
The Purifi does not have significantly different TS parameters than other drivers of comparable size and its displacement volume (Xmax × Sd) is not exorbitantly high either.
So it says more about the developers of the loudspeaker than about this particular driver.

if you just want to make some sound then yes but this leaves out any characteristics like linearity, frequency response and dispersion

Do differently shaped woofers (assuming the same diameter) really have different dispersion characteristics? It's been my assumption that when used in a way that avoids exciting the breakup modes, then the dispersion for similarly sized woofers is mostly the same.

Also, side question, I've only seen distortion measurement on axis, is the distortion behaviour on axis reflective of the distortion behaviour off axis? Is the on axis measurement sufficient? And also is it different between woofers and tweeters?

Thanks.

However, this is of tertiary importance for the calculation of the passive diaphragm, which was the issue at hand

I have the feeling we are writing past each other.
I have nothing against Purifi chassis and think you have found many detailed solutions that together make a very good overall package.
But the calculation of a passive cone is the same for all drivers with the same Thiele Small parameters. This means that if you take a driver with largely the same parameters, it will also benefit from two passive diaphragms.
If you see it differently, I would be happy to hear an explanation.
Whether the overall result with drivers other than the Purifi will have the same measurable and audible acoustic quality is not something I want to discuss.

you mean if two vs one passive radiator helps? if we disregard the nonlinear side then increasing the total Sd of the passives extends the bass the reason is that the total mass of the PRs for a given tuning frequency scales with Sd squared. this means twice the mass on each PR in the dual PR case. this lowers the free air resonance frequency of the PR and this gives deeper bass since the combined response has a null at this frequency.

[just wonderful to have this kind of educational post on this forum, thanks to you and @Audionaut for the dialogue]

The AsciLab stuff looks amazing, and thanks for the price list.
Assuming it stays unchanged, S6C plus BX10C will be 26K USD.
That's 42000 AUD.
Add freight and GST (our version of a VAT) and it's 50K AUD. Which is identical to the cost of Genelec 8361 + W371A (including GLM) here.
