AsciLab speakers are about to launch

individual covers for each driver that attache via hidden magnets would ideal. You can always remove them for optimal performance
Yes, magnetic detachable covers might do the job, but that could be a slight price increase for everyone due to fabrication costs. And not everyone uses the grills, so that might be a waste of materials..

having the covers might result in higher demand and sales volume. The covers themselves could be sold separately at additional cost so the cost on the bare speaker is kept minimal. In any case, if you look at the majority of consumer and even pro speakers, driver protection is the status quo...

Come to think of it, a lot of people (even on this thread) want the grills on their speakers, so I think that you are right in that sense. If the grills could increase sales and let Ascilabs design more speakers, I'm up for it!

Depends on the market tastes too. One speaker brand I know, designs and sets up their speakers for use with grilles on, said grilles very carefully designed to sit in a slot around the baffle edge. The first thing the 'audiophiles' who seem to be buying them these days do, is take the grilles off to display them in their acoustically bare rooms (judging by proudly displayed system pics on the maker's forum) :(

So, I'd suggest simple magnetic grilles if possible and maybe offered as an extra for those that want them (I need grilles as dust protection as much as anything else these days). All I'd ask is that they don't affect performance/dispersion. Linn used to have a kind of baffle-covered 'body stocking' made of negligee material (ooh-missus) with elastic edges which fitted in a slot half an inch or so behind the front (see Tukan, Keilidh, Kaber and I think Keltik too, from yesteryear)

FWIW, I don’t have young kids, and my wife’s cats are all declawed so the only damage they can do to me music room is to pee on The Dude’s rug. Which they have. I don’t have the grills on my speakers, but I do think speakers intended for the domestic market should come with the option of having grills.

Buchardt made grilles for the A500SE with waveguide and purifi bass driver.
Looks ugly to me, but functional and can be removed.

The best are definitely the ones that are rectangular, covering the entire front baffle, and with hidden magnets to hold the grill/cloth in place. Users that don't want them just remove and nothing is changed visually. Those that need it, it looks like a classy black front.

These are close to worst case grills. A perfectly circular grill causes severe diffraction as all reflected waves occur at the same distance. It results in massive peaks and nulls. Rectangular grill are not great but definitely better.

A Rectangular grille covering the entire speaker also causes diffraction issues with the tweeter. Although it is better than a grille that covers the tweeter in a circular shape, it still presents problems. Therefore, if a grille is added, it will likely only protect the woofer. The tweeter is primarily protected by a phase plug, so it generally isn’t a problem in most environments.

There have been requests for speaker grills, so we've made them. They are designed to ensure no loss in sound quality, so you can always use the speakers with the grill attached.

Currently waveguide is 3D printed, So don’t have worry about that rough surface and gap.

Nicely transparent! I guess the relatively low crossover point helps there?
Exactly, But Even if the woofer plays higher like 2kHz It would be okay too. Not covering tweeter is important.

The speed with which you have implemented the grills is truly impressive.

Yes, very impressive. I hope they're just as quick when it comes to sending speakers to Amir, Erin or anyone else :p

Chatting to them they are super switched on, I don’t imagine sending speakers for review will be an issue.
