AsciLab F6B vs Elac DBR62 for a small room.

How do the C6B compare to the F6B?

I'm struggling to work out an effective use of subs with my DBR62s so swinging back between trying to find a sub that fits or just replacing them with more capable mains.

I've got a pair of the DBR62's paired with dual SVS SB1000 subs. Sounds fantastic to me

Q7 Meta perhaps? ELAC DF63?
That's about as close as you'll get to a speaker that doesn't need subs (for music, anyway).
Even the Q11 is -6dB at 37Hz, that's comparable to the Wiim sub pro that everyone is describing as a bass augmentor not a sub.
I'd argue that you need to be able to generate a flat in room response to 30Hz for music, that's going to ask a bit of the upstream electronics.

When used with a sub, there's IMO no reason to pay extra for the F6B.

The sealed F6Bs will do just as well there for less money.

If price isn't a factor, I'd easily take the F6B/F6Bs over the DBR62.
Not sure I understood this fully. Are you suggesting that *with* a sub, there's no difference (or no need to upgrade) between the Elacs and the Ascilab?

I'm presuming that both really need a sub for 30Hz in room response.

I'd expect the F6B to be significantly better in isolation compared to the DBR62 based on Amir's and Erin's assessments.

I was talking about the F6B vs F6Bs.

Ah, I didn't realise they were two different models

Do you think the F6B is a useful upgrade from DBR62? A slightly used pair for around £800. I watched Erin's review and he was nowhere near as enthused as he was over the C6B. Bear in mind I've just pulled the trigger on the Elac 3030 sub.

Yes.

I watched Erin's review and he was nowhere near as enthused as he was over the C6B.
Going off his enthusiasm is useless as that's influenced by dozens of factors unrelated to the speaker itself.

His data is not influenced though and there I can hardly see a case for the C6B over the F6B:

Also nice to compare them to the Elac:

The Asci's stand out especially for their better directivity control and lower multitone distortion.

Also note the differences in impedance between the C6B and F6B.

At 100-500Hz, the F6B is at 3.5Ω where the C6B drops to a more challenging 2.6Ω

That can impact your choice of amplification.

For example, if you want to use an Amp based on the TPA325x (WiiM, 3e Audio, Fosi, Aiyima, Topping etc.), for the C6B you'd want to make sure the Amp uses dual TPA325x chips in PBTL mode to handle the low impedance.
E.g: 3e A5/A7, Fosi V3 Mono, WiiM Amp Ultra, Topping PA7

The F6B OTOH will be driven just fine by a single TPA325x in BTL mode.
E.g. 3e A5se/A7se, WiiM Amp/Amp Pro/Vibelink, Topping PA5/Mini300, Fosi V3 Stereo.

I'd be using my existing yamaha A-S501 and no intention of changing that. The C6B is outside my budget and I can't even see it for sale at purite audio.

Generally dealers reduce prices when they can’t sell items, this isn’t the case with AsciLab.

Indeed. Keith I had a look on the website, but I don't see either the C6B or the F6B on there? What's the £GBP for the F6B?

Yes.

I'll have to go back and watch them again, but generally I only watch the objective sections of his reviews as you say opinion is largely meaningless. I got the impression the specs of the F6B were not so much better than the DBR62 to warrant the upgrade. C6B altogether different proposition though.

B, I made a ‘compact 2-way’ page specifically for the F6B/S and C6B,
Prices are unchanged.

Thank, that's really helpful. I thought the C6B were more expensive, which isn't really what I wanted to know....
