Your example of a 200w Mcintosh at 7 meter MLP, listening at 90db, even with 90db sensitive speakers, requires 309 watts. That is with 3db headroom. Many Class D amps don't have 3db headroom.

I'm not defending anybody's choices. Just showing you the math.

So why do audiophiles still want some McIntosh at 200w to supply 90db speakers ? According to them, it gives more dynamics

It is related with the crest factor.
If you play average 90dB, the peak factor can be 100dB, or even 110dB in music signal. Lack of current makes limitation to produce peak factors, additionally wide band compression and distortion. Lot of lack makes it won’t sound like real-like or dynamic.

In theory higher sensitivity speakers produce less distortion and suffer less compression for a given SPL. At lower listening levels the typical distortion levels are probably inaudible but maybe some very sensitive listeners can hear the benefit and to them it sounds more “dynamic”.

Another possible reason for the claim that higher sensitivity speakers sound more dynamic is that they typically comprise of more drive units, I.e. have more radiating surface area. Anyone who works with PA systems in large rooms know that for bass impact and dynamics you need big woofers in big rooms, bandwidth being equal, the bigger woofer sounds more dynamic. So scale that back to a small hifi room and the effect probably still remains in that larger speakers with multiple woofers can much more easily “drive” the room and create a physical effect in the low frequencies.

It's clear ) I think it's worth waiting before investing in a pair of F6Bs. In any case, that's what I would do )
Ascilab is a startup : even more interesting products are yet to come
 
That's done ! I I checked Audiophonics website this morning, and they're distributing Ascilab speakers from now on, with a very moderate increase in price ! Great news indeed...

Even if often cited this is a first time for me. Very interesting.

When you refer to 3db headroom, this I understand to be peak output vs operating output. How would you know what adjustment to make for different class D amps? E.G. some of the 3255 chip models, or indeed the Purify cited above?

If I reduce the headroom in the Amplifier Power required panel, counter intuitively the required amplifier power also goes down. So I must be miss understanding something here.
 
If you truly want to learn about cardioid speakers and the benefits of them, I would suggest doing some internet research on kii speakers and bruno putzeys. I'm not advocating that he is the only expert. Just that there are a number of very educational interviews on YT where he explains in detail what the kii speakers do and how they do it. Asking open ended questions and making uneducated assumptions like you're currently doing won't educate you on what you're asking and trying to learn.

That's hilarious. Since I went active speakers for my desktop, I've sworn off the cabling mess of amps. However, it's soooo tempting being a gearhead.
If you use a streaming amp, then the cable count is pretty minimal isn't it?

Am I the only one wondering about the 7m listening distance? Seems crazy to need 90db while sitting that far away in the home environment. But maybe it's just me :)
 
I had a Yamaha amp with peak power meters. I never required more than one watt.

Assuming highly dymamic music, a hundred watts peak might occur. Well within the capabilities of most amps, even the cheap class D amps.

But in fact, most of my music sources seem to be dynamically compressed. 20 dB peaks just don’t happen.
