Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 V2 - Review & Measurements by Erin

What we (and by "we" I mean "I") need is someone who owns the Klippel NFS in Vancouver, so I can start to provide speakers for reviews.

I have no ethical problems purchasing speakers, getting the spin data, paying for this service if needed, then returning the speaker.

A man can hope... :)
There is no ethical dilemma imo.... It's research.. And a community service....just don't pick on the little guys more than the big guys...

I mention that, since Amir or Erin don't to do this.

They will sell/donate/ship speakers back to vendor, after the review.

They'll never return speakers themselves…in the scenario where Amir/Erin has bought the speakers with their own money, of course.

Which is fine. To each their own.

„We“ need a Klippel in Europe.

Funny there isn’t one yet, as they are an European company.

@VintageFlanker what about you? ;-) Maybe get some crowdfunding going.
What we "need" is a Klippel with the associate hardware to measure big boys,as time passes bookshelf and desktop will all be the same more or less.
So,a heavy duty one!

I honestly interpret this as saying this is the best monitor under $1,000 ... At least in Erin's opinion...

Amir is in Seattle, that's not close enough?

Last time I checked how much $ it would take to ship my speaker to Amir, the costs has gone up by 33% (stupid COVID surge pricing that affected a lot of companies, including shipping).

So I got discouraged back then.

Hadn't kept up, didn't know of these. I do love my Sierra-1s (NrT to boot!), as well as a few 170SEs and 200SEs I have....

Erin says it is a "deep" speaker. It is partly the on-axis shape 1-5 kHz but probably also the relatively smooth dispersion in the same region. It should be very ear-friendly and smooth.

  • Does sound somewhat “deep”. The only way I can reconcile this in the data is that there is a mild MF/HF shelf (around 2-4kHz) of about 1.5dB

So nothing on their forum leading up to this?
Idk.... There was a big announcement at about midnight on the forum.... I don't follow Dave's products all that closely on a day to day basis, there may well have been some rumors flying around...this sure looks like a budget end gamer for some folks( like me)... If you watch the vid Erin says some stuff that makes me think these are a current mega value...

I hope either Erin or Amir gets to review the cheapest klippel
designed/updated speaker Ascend makes, the CMT-340SE2. It is USD 780. I would be really interested to see what a difference the klippel can make to sub USD1k. The measurements are on the website but their impressions would be really interesting considering the other speakers they have heard in the past.

Ascend is killing it one release after the other. Great to see Erin reviewing them.

I was shocked at the $500 price difference between the Sierra LX and the Sierra 1 v2. Then I realized what Seas is charging for those Titan woofers on Madisound and it all made sense.

He certainly doesn’t have much in the way of complaints, which is a good thing. The only “significant” drawback seems to be its output limitations, which is reasonably expected for a compact bookshelf speaker with a single 5.25” mid/woofer. Of course, Ascend has larger models which presumably remedy that issue for most domestic situations.

It’s nice to have someone with authority provide their subjective opinion, but I don’t think it’s required now that Erin has validated Dave’s Klippel measurements. You can see the pros and cons between the two speakers: the Sierra 1 has a nicer cabinet, a bit better spin, and goes a bit deeper. The 340 is more sensitive, has better distortion, and is obviously cheaper. IMO the 340 would make a really good HT speaker.
