Sam Fender. Singer-songwriter-guitar player from Newcastle, England.

Knew about him after his first release, "Hypersonic Missiles," a few years ago. But his 2021 release, "Seventeen Going Under," is a magnificent record that is my Album of the Year for 2021. Writes lyrics about growing up poor in the North East of England, about societal trends, effed-up politicians, youth suicide, etc. Has been called the "English Springsteen," which is a bit of a stretch, but you get the gist.

The dude has a great voice, almost Jeff Buckley-like in some tracks. A lot of influences in the sound -- Springsteen (lots of sax!), The Cure, The Strokes, The War on Drugs, etc.

Really dig this kid.

A sort of female Leonard Cohen but still with her own style. She's great at bringing up taboo subjects

Spelling (yes that's the band name). Don't really know how to describe this. But it does something right for me: have been repeatedly playing this as loud as bearable instead of getting work done

Julie Mehretu. There's a current major exhibit of her work in Minneapolis. I've spent three to five hours at the exhibit over three or four sessions observing and taking notes.

Juha Kujanpää.

What a beautiful mix of styles and so utterly melodic. I bought his three latest albums immediately. Love it. Here's a taste [coincidentally I'm doing a bit of gardening in the very warm Australian summer right now...]

Spiritbox. A metal band from Victoria, BC, Canada that many have named band of the year and their debut Eternal Blue as album of the year.
The front woman Courtney LaPlante has a beautiful singing voice, but also does harsh screaming with the best of them. The song writing, both musically and lyrically, is fantastic and they can't really be placed in a specific genre of metal or hard rock.
One of the few albums that I can listen to from start to finish over and over again.

Stats... Unfortunately I cottoned onto them just as they broke up... but... they have two records out that I rather enjoy!

Wet Leg: a British indie band from the Isle of Wight.

Rhian Teasdale – lead vocals, rhythm guitar
Hester Chambers – lead vocals, lead guitar

The song is called Chaise Longue:

"I've got a chaise longue in my dressing room, and a pack of warm beer that we can consume..."

This song really has been lifting my spirit during these trying months Every time I play it a huge smile emerges on my face.
