Good morning. What a night it's been... Yesterday evening I was watching some live Dream Theater on Youtube, and YT suggested a Jordan Rudess track - live at the Keith Emerson Tribute show a few weeks ago, playing "Tarkus". So I listened to that, and Youtube suggested another track from the show, by someone called Rachel Flowers. Who she? It had been taken down, so I searched... and down the rabbit hole I went.

She started playing piano at a very early age. She has the rare ability to listen to a piece and not just play it note for note, but reinterpret it.

Keith Emerson was a big influence on her music as she grew up. She got to meet him a few times. He thought highly of her ability, there is a story that she once made a mistake / reinterpreted one of his pieces. He heard it, and started playing it that way live because, he said, it sounded better that way.

"Tarkus", played on a Hammond C3 and Keith Emerson's personal Modular Moog. Not bad, considering she hadn't played the Moog before that day. Play loud.

If you like jazz, you may like this. The sound isn't great, but the playing is. She's in good company. You can tell they're not expecting much at the beginning but by the end of her solo they're convinced...

And finally, just when you think that's all she does, she gets invited to play with Dweezil Zappa:

There are lots of tracks on her Soundcloud channel, some originals, all instruments played by her:

And masses of videos linked on reddit:

Finally, a short background piece, including playing jazz at age 11:

"Multi-talented instrumentalist and composer Rachel Flowers was born on December 21, 1993. Arriving 15 weeks premature, she lost her eyesight as an infant due to Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)."

Yep, which makes her achievements even more remarkable. She'd be remarkable even if she was sighted.

Here's proof, if anyone still needs convincing, that she has a rare talent. She walks up to an instrument she's never played (and will never see), and within 3 minutes she's jamming on a Thelonius Monk piece.

Was a fan of her on Youtube, then the TV show, The Voice. What horrible news of her being shot by random guy :(.

I didn't know anything about her Amir; I saw a headline mentioning "The Voice" the day the news came, but never checked.
It's only yesterday that I decided to view a video of her after yesterday's terrible event. Because only few days before, also in Florida, she was murdered.
And with that hatred crime of yesterday her name kept popping up...so I was curious and that's how I discovered her plus the sad news.
But the first video I decided to check, @ random, ...the beginning was promotion (it was boring)...but then her voice, after couple minutes of promoting herself, she started singing...wow...what a voice! Sure, it's pop music and all interpretations, but she had a big future in the singing industry, and who knows if jazz or blues would have been in her future...or opera.
I cannot find that video now! She has so many youtube videos, it's just mind boggling.

But here's a different one:

Her too I knew nothing about her...she just popped out like that while I was checking more videos of Christina Grimmie.

* This is not my favorite genre of pop music; but it takes my mind away of all the recent news.
And also, our younger generations it's us building our future world with all our children.
Perhaps there is hope if we let the children play peaceful music games...after all it's their lives with ours. And a microphone the way she uses it doesn't hurt anyone.

Just trying to "fit in" here, I checked my purchase history for the last 18 months.

I discovered Gil Goldstein. That's it.

The rest of the purchases were "more of the same old stuff". When I find somebody I really like, I go deep and get more.

Ok, it's not new, I failed, unless a 2006 release date counts as new. I suppose it does to me. Record review here.

I cheated though, because I discovered him by investigating with whom other known players were working, in this case, a multiple-hit choice featuring Don Alias, Richard Bona, Randy Brecker, and Mike Manieri, who were already known to me (although I'm not real familiar with the Brecker person). It was probably a Richard Bona search that got me to this disk.

I discover "new music" by seeing with which unknown (to me) headliner people I do know (and like) are willing to invest their time and energy.

I don't discover "new music" by seeing what's being pushed out the door this week before being forgotten by next weeks risciacqua e ripeti .

But that's just me, you're all invited over for free beer (guaranteed none from the Bud/Corona/Coors/Miller store shelves, though).

I'm not a bad guy. I know I'm no fun, though.

If the artists others have posted above don't wind up working in a gas station in ten/twenty years, maybe I'll discover them too. Stranger things have happened.

New to me, as usual. :D
Just caught this guy tonight on the Late With Jools Holand show.
John Newman
Interesting voice and phrasing though I do wish I could understand his lyrics better. LOL
Really worth a listen if you haven't heard before.
Grabbed the Tribute CD off ebay for $5.99 shipped.

I'm a big fan of Keith and ELP. Attended a number of concerts in the Palmer and Powel configurations but about this chicks cover of Tarkus all I can say is WOW.
Thanks Don!

Yes I have his first album... Tribute?

It's cool you watch later with jools holand. His own music / band is worth looking up.

:) Her rendition of Trilogy on the same day is equally stunning.

Edit: She was 17 when she did those pieces. Here's an excerpt of "Tarkus" that she did recently:
