Are headsets bad? I don't see it.

Note to self, never discuss saving money at ASR. :p
If you're looking for a great value voice microphone, I'm a massive fan of the Micbooster Clippy lav mic.

It's omnidirectional too, so will require being mounted as close to your mouth as possible, like for example clipped to your collar.

For a more traditional, desk mounted microphone, check out Neat's mics, they're supposedly extremely good value.

I really appreciate the suggestions. I may try printing a throat mount for the calibration mic someday for fun anyways. A horn should work both ways in theory…
 
I've never even considered a headset with both receiving and transmitting abilities....but I don't game. I'd think the best integration of headphones/mic would be the way to but doesn't mean they need to be in the same device
