Hello everyone! Looking for some opinions/experiences with APS studio monitors. I'm especially interested in Aethers. I haven't seen any measurements for them besides Sound on Sound reviews and I'm curious how do they compare to some more established brands such as Neumann. Any help greatly appreciated - thanks.

Two models below from Sound & Recording magazine. They are just ok. But the gulf from ok to excellent is deep. Self-noise at 10cm for both is 23.5dBA, 8.5dB higher than the 15dBA typical of Neumann's monitors, for example.

Thank you very much! Wasn't expecting much from Coax and Aeon was superceded by Aether which should be more or less the same with exception of some custom bass port on the back. So far looks like nothing special here...

No waveguide usually means the speaker's not worth pursuing.

I may have some old measurements in my archive.
What's the most important waveguide offers on sound quality that no waveguide design lacks? For example im interested for the best possible midrange performance especially for extreme metal. I want forward, punchy, present, dynamic, fast, full bodied, detailed articulate, textured, clear midrange. In price 500-1.500€ which you consider as the best options for that matter? Im most interested for APS Klasik 2020 which is no waveguide..then i consider also Kali IN8 V2, Kali IN5, KRK V6 S4, Yamaha HS8, Neumann KH120ii, Genelec 8030C, HEDD Type 07, Eve SC 207, Adam A7V, Dynaudio BM5 MK3. Is it possible that cheap monitors like JBL 305 or Mackie MR624 to be better than APS Klassik 2020 in midrange performance for extreme metal because of Klasik's lacking of waveguide? I can't believe it..Anyway rank these monitors in your opinion based on my asked purpose. My room is small 4x4 and not well treated.

I would advise you start your own thread rather than necroposting in a thread over a year old.

Anyway.

What a waveguide does is basically restrict the dispersion pattern (i.e., how the sound is projected into the room) of a tweeter or midrange driver. The reason we want to do this is because as it turns out, the reflections generated by a speaker in a room have a major hand in how the speaker actually sounds to us. A big woofer and a little tweeter will have very different dispersion at the same frequency - a big driver's output is much narrower than a small one's at the same frequency. To get the off-axis (i.e., the response that isn't coming right at you from the speaker) response to match reasonably well, the tweeter must have its off-axis response controlled to match whatever it is crossing to.
