It's worse than that. The sound is coming off speakers, so room interaction and the sound signature of the speakers comes into play. If the signals for the digital replay and LP replay were sourced as a line level signal into the final digital recorder, the difference between the LP and the digital source would be stark. It was a bogus comparison all the way through. I was going to post that at WaPo, they closed comments way before anyone with any sense could point that out.
