I recently bought a new android phone:

Which has a 3.5mm audio socket. I can get sound from the speakers, or through headphones via the socket, however, I can't get any sound from a USB DAC.

I've tried 3 USB Dongles/DACs and none of them works, it just completely ignores them.

I wasn't expecting the inclusion of a 3.5mm socket to effectively disable audio via USB and I'm sure I've had Android phones in the past where I was able to use either the jack, or a USB DAC.

Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change?

I found it!

I'll leave the thread here in case anyone else runs into a similar issue.

Go to Settings -> Accessibility & convenience -> Scroll down to the bottom and enable OTG connection.

Silly me, trying to fix a sound issue by looking in the "Sound & vibration" section.

Some phones/android versions (it only happend to me occasionally and not in all android versions) by default didn't supply power over the USB to power a DAC.

Try to connect it to a Desktop DAC with independent power supply, if it works then you need to search the parameter in the phone (i'm sorry, i didn't remember the name) to power the usb devices with power from the phone.

I hope it helps.

Edit: you beat me founding the solution ;)

I think that aspect of USB behaviour (along with what sort of USB drivers they include) is up to the manufacturer, not mandated by Google, so things may work on one phone and not another. There are also variations in how much USB power different phones can provide beyond the base level (100mA IIRC?) so more power-hungry devices may need to be used with a powered hub.
