I think it's unlikely to be either of them.I'm not sure if the amp is distorting at full or 3/4 volume or the cans.
Did you check your sound settings? Digital volume at max or close to max, all effects disabled, etc.

No, I'm saying that's where it should be at. And that effects should be disabled, too.Is there something wrong with digital volume at max?
You are supposed to reduce the preamp value by -6 or -9 dB otherwise you might be digitally clipping the signal. By the way, why do you boost bass so much that it distorts? What effect are you trying to recreate?I've used Equalizer APO several; times and always end up going back to a pure sound. The problem with the DT770 cans is that I can't drive them loud enough and when I do the bass distorts so badly, the bass sounds like a flappy fart. I have a magni 3 so I was assuming this would do the job - I'm not sure if the amp is distorting at full or 3/4 volume or the cans.
These are 250 ohms so perhaps the 80 ohms would have been better but overall I'm not hearing anything exciting with these cans, I heard few tracks that I thought yeah that sounds good but overall the lack of loudness resulted in me going back to M50's within about 1 hour or so.
The AKG 712 wont give you the sound signature that you want. For kicks, get the Cooler Master MH252 to test a different sound signature. As mentioned the DT770's didn't give me any kind of wow factor that I had when switching to the M50's, perhaps there is no more wow factor to be found above the M50's, I think the AKG K712 might be my next can to try, I think if they don't give me any excitement I'll take my time in deciding on my next move.
it's odd that so many reviews say get some HD650's but the sound is flat with the Sennheiser veil, these don't sound like exciting headphones.
Well I'm looking for better clarity, sound stage, punchier bass, bass extension right down to some silly Hz like 5, so I'm thinking open back is the route for sound stage - perhaps not bass but the AKG 712 advertise a 3db lift in the bass area plus they don't cost that must relative to other recommended cans such as the HD650's. So I'm keen on trying some open backs...

When I say clarity perhaps I meant detail ? I want to hear more detail from the music I listen to. As mentioned when I upgraded from my Sony cans which weren't cheap to the M50X it was 100% obvious the M50X sounded clearer, as mentioned the Sony's sound muffled in comparison or perhaps it was just elevated treble ?
I'm not sure I want anything elevated to be honest I just want the cans to deliver the full sound spectrum as intended - so no roll offs, dips or peaks.
FWIW I have heard the HD650. I'd still suggest the HD700 (though the improvement isn't massive).Yes garbulky I'll check out the HD700's, I think I did listen to 1 review last night and they said the HD700's have a different / odd sound and the reviewer preferred the HD650's, but yeah thanks for any suggestions.
@Tidaliser I thought you wanted closed back cans?
