And hats off again to developers on this site!

Honoring the legacy of osmium gramophone needles. :)
Cool.

In all seriousness: congratulations & best of luck!

For those following this thread and testing Osmium, a new development version is now available, featuring a complete overhaul of the graphics engine, now entirely based on Qt.

Simply update to Dev.8 from the Development Channel in the Update section.

After updating, you can — and must! — select Qt (New) as the Display Mode in the webGUI configuration section.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the update post! altough you do not need to select anything as with dev8 qt is the default, you can switch back to the old one if you want/need

SlimPing LMS plugin lets you stream from home through your Osmium Tailscale connection via any Subsonic compatible CP / player like Symfonium

Very conserving of bandwidth if your internet is metered

Thanks for this hint, I will have a look.

You are right @adri6412, thank you for pointing this out.

With the new implementation I am know able to run Osmium with full UI and graphical animated VU meters on my quad core Celeron J4105 at just 51 degrees, 10 degrees less than previous implementation.
This makes Osmium now even more suited for low end, fanless PCs.

Well done Adriano!

Moode Audio on a RPi4B (2GB ram = 55USD atm) x 4 and Daphile on repurposed pc work well for me as both are headless and are accessed by any browser on tablet, phone, pc and even 75" google tv with out need for an app, I dont need to look at album art or vu meters when accessing my nas, spotify etc to listen to music.
I understand that Moode has VUs if you want them and I do do web searches occasionally when curious about what I'm hearing.
Daphile has a number of skins available and I like that you can attach a portable dvd player and rip and play cd's
so while it looks good Osmium is not for me as it cant sound any better than what I use

I am a 15year user of Daphile. Although I fully appreciate the work done by Kimmo over the years, it’s a fact that Daphile seems to be on a dead end. It’s from May 2025 that the developer does not show any sign of life. You can’t even update Lyrion that is stuck to version 9.0.3. Daphile is also closed, no Tailscale or whatever extra component is possible. That’s why I welcomed enthusiastically the appearance of a new player at the horizon. If you are fan headless, that’s one of operational modes offered also by Osmium.
That said, I appreciate you are happy with your setup, but luckily the world moves forward. Good luck.

One daphile feature I think Osmium could do with is the read-only rootfs. Couple that with an A/B type version upgrade system and you have a proper reliable appliance not just another computer. It can be done with a debian base, but might be easier with yocto.

That is definetly possible but it will require a complete rework of the operating system and a complete reinstall for all the users that installed the iso available now.
I will need to move all my custom configuration and files to a separate filesystem keeping the os secure with something like overlayfs

I can’t find any SlimPing LMS plugin in the standard Lyrion repo. Can you be more precise? Is an external repository required?

Thanks

That sounds about right, especially if you didn't start structuring it with a read-only rootfs in mind. It's a big change, but I think a worthwhile one for appliance-like reliability, and less painful the earlier you start working towards it. It needn't require a reinstall for existing users, although you may decide that you don't want to write and test the migration process that would be necessary to migrate an existing installation to the new format, especially if people might have customised bits of their install because that's relatively easy so far. There are systems like rauc.io that help with a lot of the tooling and have integration into some of the embedded build systems.

By using remote access tools like Tailscale ideally without having to set up full enterprise AAA infrastructure

How does one deal with the necessary inbound authentication to feel comfortable with the outside access from a security standpoint?
WireGuard in my case, but setting it up yourself requires fairly detailed understanding of your network situation, and possibly an externally hosted machine to act as a gateway. It's more like SME or homelab level than full enterprise. Services like Tailscale are there to make it easier for people without the skill to set it up themselves, so long as you're willing to trust them to keep access secure.
