I suspect this is a paid informercial. But regardless, it has excellent technical detail. Sadly, no measurements.

What I found interesting was the 60 watt dissipation from the field coils of midrange and tweeter. Quite high. Her also said the power supply is tuned to that speaker. What happens when either fails?

AJ - has he ever designed a product that wasn’t very/ well regarded ?

IMO he combines several excellent approaches eg coaxial, and now push-pull bass
The only but obvious one he’s apparently yet to embrace is designing with Klippel measurements. maybe/ hopefully he will get the prototype in a Klippel facility

By whom? I have found his coaxial Elac speakers to be OK but not excellent. His reputation among general press is what you state. But objectively is not there. Nor does that seem to be his goal as we have discussed.

The target of this speaker seems to be folks with low power/SET tube amps and such. Otherwise, there is little reason to opt for 95 dBSPL sensitivity in bass.

There are exceptions, though if irc not many.

You’re right they don’t need to be so sensitive. But my understanding is that unlike field coil magnets, that doesn’t add much to cost or complexity, or cause compromises for the majority of us with ‘normal’ amplifiers

Otoh … I got the understanding that for a given SPL driver excursion will be very low. OTBE - so will distortion

Well designed, non-diffracting grilles, as I was expecting. Yay!

The whole field-coil thing, though ... and only on the mid and tweeter ... just weird. I don't see a pre-existing problem that is being solved by that ...

Of course the same is true of KEF's Meta tech ... :)

A big, new mid-century design speaker for tube amps. I feel seen. :)

He mentioned 96db sensitivity, but he didn’t mention the impedance did he?

I’ll be curious to see how these measure to see if they hit the sensitivity specs.

Interesting that AJ’s goal seemed very close to John Devore’s goal when designing the O/96 speakers many years ago: old school mid-century design, wide baffle squat body, high sensitivity, and designed for tube amplifiers, capable of good imaging and low bass response.

I found Devore produced a very pleasing result (his speakers became to his surprise by far biggest selling speaker).

I like the look of the Devores better, but I think the AJ Troubadour speakers look quite nice with their grills on.

I wonder how this one will go for AJ. I presume it’s probably going to measure better than the Devores.

Think what you will about AJ's absolute science acumen, the man is a genius at describing what he is doing in a way that isn't offensive to those well-versed in the science of audio while at the same time appealing to those who know some (or hardly anything) and helping them feel good about the decision to buy.

I don't believe that particular skill necessarily excludes a commitment to science, by the way. The measurements will tell.

Nothing against the sensitivity 95 in marketing speak is probably 92 for real . You can use the benchmark AHB2 in stereo for every application.

For SET use I imagine you still need horns .

I know some here can be cynical about the stories that come with the speakers and the salesmanship. I personally really enjoy it.
I think it adds a bit of humanness and romance to the product.

Probably the same reason I enjoy wine tasting courses at restaurants, where the Sommelier gives the story or information about where the wine came from and what makes it interesting. Part of the experience part of the fun,

Of course it is.

When he worked for Elac and released new models every three months without any prototypes... or listening to the damn thing...
I remember a witch hunt was launched against poor Amirm, who first reported the problem, by paid self-proclaimed YouTube reviewers.
It was a resonance that sang so much that it could be heard on any material, since it was located in the vocal area and where all the important instruments were.
It was about making a small, 2 x 2 inch sealed chamber without damping for an aluminum concentric midrange speaker.
Since the air had nowhere to go or disperse, it returned through the opening between the midrange and tweeter and produced resonance with all sorts of harmonics of the same.

It's unfortunate that the designer never admitted the flaw in his speaker, despite whistling like crazy, and neither did Elac, so many people ended up being scammed and robbed of their hard-earned money.
That's where Andrew showed me who he really works for...

The side effect of such efficiency is not about the small tube amps only.
Is also about this super clean small amps at the top of the list, which I suspect would gloriously drive it to reference levels (we have to see multitone tests and compression tests as well though) .

On the other hand, 60W of heat is no small, the long term effects are still unknown.

Very skeptical about it, it will probably get the same rant active speakers get from the usual suspects.

It sure is unusual and unique, some people would love this just because of that .

Wonder what response down to the 30’s means ? What the port tuning frequency with 4 or 2 ports ? He did not say exactly ? Is this not yet decided or deemed to technical for an infomercial ?

No mentions of crossover frequencies or orders ? Suppose it will have the requisite expensive capacitors and air coils for this market .

Eyeballing the cabinet, that's about 150 liters?
Combined with two 12" drivers+ports, 30Hz F3 is totally doable.

Top of the class to be sure.
