Just a final update (as well as plugging this wonderful measurement resource again):

The (English-speaking) customer service of S&R's parent company (Ebner Media Group) very kindly waived my overdue charges. For some reason, my card was indeed linked to my account (which made the purchase, and I was allowed to access the download link), but wasn't charged. So I made a transfer to their bank account directly. A wonderful experience to accompany a wonderful resource.

Too bad they don't publish the data in spinorama form yet though, obiously they have the required measurements already :)

Hopefully some German-speaking subscriber who knows about spins will suggest it to their editorial team. Their polar maps are individually very informative, but they have changed their scale and smoothing for their polars several times, making comparisons between different speakers more difficult.

Thanks @Ilkless - good shout. Guess those years of German at secondary school will finally come in handy ;)

From the measurements it looks like the Genelec 8050 I've been debating in the other thread measures ridiculous well :D.

Again the Neumann KH-420's crush it.

I bought mine without audition as I have nowhere within 500 miles to hear them. I bought them based on the data provided by Neumann and verified by the reviews in S&R, Fidelity-Magazin and even SoS magazine without measurements.

IMHO the performance expected from the exceptional measurements has been realized. I believe that measurements can tell you most of the story.

The CLF (Common Loudspeaker Format) Group was formed for the purpose of defining and maintaining a single, open file format that loudspeaker manufacturers could use to supply data to end users in the professional sound and acoustics community. As more acoustic and sound system design software has developed, the number of formats used for loudspeaker data has increased. The CLF Group have agreed to support a common format, making loudspeaker data easier to supply and use. Our goal is to make loudspeaker performance and polar data available in an open but secure format.

In case you are looking for free, legal .PDF of soundandrecording.de reviews (in German) it is actually possible to download most of their reviews in high quality for free from Thomann.de
Only:
  • it must be a speaker that Thomann.de currently sells
  • you must be registered user and logged in on their German webpage (for other countries the German reviews are not offered)
  • then look under reviews for download on the product page.
In addition some reviews are offered for free also from audiopro.de (JBL M2), Genelec.com and Neumann.com
