Amplifier choices

Thanks, very enlightening and appreciated. Any suggestions on a budget amp?
If you are looking for something compact, this combination might be for you:

If you decide on a pre amp, the choices of amplifiers increase. There are many good class D amplifiers that Amir has tested. I had then considered some non-load dependent class D amp, with as much power as possible for the money I was willing to spend.

Speaking of how much amp power is needed. With music with a lot of dynamics, a hell of a lot of power is needed, see#20

Would this work for you?

Audiophonics has excellent products, customer service, and shipping.

I have a system consisting of an ayre ax7 amp, ayre cx cdplayer and a Sony HAP Z1ES. Im looking for a new amplifier since the Ayre ax7 is broken and will be expensive to repair. I really just want a 2 channel amp with 80-100 watts per channel. My quandary is that I don't see why I need an amp with a dac. The cx7 and the Hap z1es have dacs that I don't think need to run through a dac in an integrated amp. Am I missing something? If I'm not bluetoothing and only plan on listening to cd's or Flac files, do I need an amp with a dac?

I'd like something simple under $1,000 that sounds good and is reliable. Oh, I am also drive a pair of Vandersteen 1c's.
I would consider just getting the Ayre repaired.
There is a Vandersteen forum, and they may be able to give you some ideas.

I threw an AIYAMA A70 onto some 2C and for $70 from Amazon it worked well.
I’d do ^that^ and get one of their subwoofers used ith the remainder as well as their crossover… That would likely be more of an upgrade.

Need a compilation of gear you want to use it as switching center and particular speakers, distances from, spl levels, etc. Budget means different things for those features....
Have you considered attending charm school?

Around here, that's considered helpful. You might recalibrate your expectations.

Audioquest is better known as Fraudioquest. Definitely no advantage there, just a waste of money. If your components are in a rack in close proximity unlikely xlr/balanced connections make any significant differences (let alone if your gear is actually balanced).
Audioquest released a white paper thirty years ago called something like: "Cables, theory verses empirical reality". I guess the words "empirical reality" mean something different when you're a cable manufacturer.

LOL definitely an issue with the word "reality". They have been the most successful, but competition from the likes of Nordost, Cardas, Synergistic Research etc point out that it's the reality of the purchaser that's screwed up.
