Hi all,

I own a pair of DIY electrostatic loudspeakers which I really enjoy listening to. They are a difficult load, so I power them using a Quad 606 MK2 amplifier that is capable of producing enhough power and prevent clipping, most of the time. Only very high dynamic range recordings at louder levels do produce minor clipping. But in practice, I hardly notice this.

The cd player, also a Quad, which I love becuase of it's good sound quality and no nonsense design, has some display issues: the display is sometimes flickering. The power amp consumes about 55 Watts when idle. The remote is not always working correctly, especially when there is strong sun light shinging in my room.

So I am looking for a new amplifier that is at least as capable as my old Quad to power my stats, but consumes less power when idle, and has better specs - I guess newer amps can have less distortion for instance - although I don't know if this will be audible.

The only problem is my distaste for modern, plastic gear: a lot of modern class D ams for instance have looks which I don't like: plastic encasings, blue led lights.

I'm just wondering if you have any suggestions for new quality amps, which are durable as well, which are a good candidate to replace the old Quad amp? Are for instasnce the modern class D amps durable?
