I recently started building out a dual purpose sound system from scratch and for the first time with enough money to actually buy new. I do about 50% music 50% home theater. Current setup:
  • miniDSP 2x4HD (using optical input from TV)
  • Parasound A23 (125wpc 8ohm, 225wpc 4ohm)
  • Klipsch RP-600M
  • 2 x HSU ULS-15 mk2 (15" sealed subs, crossed over at 150Hz)
I've had the Klipsch's for about 30 days and I'm not completely satisfied. After reading the review here and EQing some of the crossover Hz dip I do like them more, but I'm interested in similarly priced large bookshelf alternatives. Key points:
  • Shooting for $600 a pair with max at $1k
  • Willing to go used if there's decent availability
  • Good 3rd party measurements
  • Good sound even at higher SPL
  • Wider sweet spot preferred for movie nights
  • Dual binding posts (not required but preferred as my nicest cables are dual wired)
  • Bonus if a single speaker can be ordered (for vertical center)
Ones I've considered/researched extensively
  • ELAC DBR-62 - I have a pair on the way to audition
  • JBL Studio 530's - not a fan of the look
  • KEF LS50 - single binding posts, review here didn't seem to justify the $$$
What are other ones I should be considering?
