Allo Boss2 Review (Stereo Streamer)

You missed the point of my post; none your listed alternatives can touch the looks of these retro beauties:

After all, you have to look at them, they may as well be handsome. ;)

Have you looked at the Elac Debut Reference DBR-62? They look pretty similar and score pretty similar (downside is you need to amp them and they're bigger, but upside probably get louder with good amp):

ok, who can tell me, can i stream Spotify to it?

like using my mac to send wifi audio to it or inside this Boss is a Spotify login option, the rest i can figure out myself..

Yes, you can setup Spotify connect on the device..........the actual setup will be different depending on what OS you decide to use.

LMS via PiCorePlayer Sofware (Free) will support Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer and others... I use Qobuz myself.

For those of us not versed in RPi, can someone explain how Airplay works with this unit? Once it's plugged into ethernet, will iOS devices simply see it as an Airplay source? Or is something more involved in getting it to work?

I would not view the Raspberry Pi in the 'Apple World' --- Think outside that Box..... It is a stand alone device that can run a lot of OS Software. It is truly Stand Alone. Load the OS, Plug it into your DAC, or your Pre-amp, Or your Integrated Amp and Start streaming Music and Listen. You don't need 'Airplay' at all.

Edit: -- I have since found out that a lot of these OS for the Rpi will support 'Airplay'. But since I am not an 'Apple guy', I will leave that function to Apple people.

But understand, the Rpi is a Single Board Computer that requires operating System Software. Most of the OS is Free. The real simple OS you can get going rather fast, but have limited capability. The more Complex OS such as PiCorePlayer require a bit more setup time, but have a lot more features and capability.

As you saw I agreed. But I just looked into the DAC chip this uses. From the description & general specs it doesn't appear to have differential out. Which would be the only way I'd want to see a balanced out provided; originating from the DAC chip, vs manufactured in the analog domain.

https://www.cirrus.com/products/cs43198/

So if Allo was to offer that (balanced out), it would be a different product with a very different dac chip vs a generational evolution of this product. Of course they can choose to name it anything they want; carrying the Boss v#.# name if they so choose. ;) but to me, imo, it would be a different product.
Or could they could utilize 2 of them much like the Topping D30 Pro for balanced output?

Simple answer is yes. Here is the more complicated answer.

What you are buying here is just hardware. What is cool though is that multiple organizations have built images of the (Linux) OS that boot up and run on this device automatically and turn it into a streamer, local player, etc. Most of these have Airplay support built-in as well. In that case, as soon as you turn this on and let it boot (takes a few seconds), then it will show up as an Airplay to your iOS devices. Point to it, hit play and music will come out.

Great point, I think it’s possible with this player moode audio. I can see an option for WiFi access point similar to Weiss Man-301 in the settings but need to further test it for confirmation. Screen shot below:

Yes, that would be an added value for the Boss2. I have most of my collection in FLAC on external hard drives and the Allo Boss2 hooked directly to HD via USB could be what I am looking for, as I do not wish to spend the megabucks I spent for the Weiss MAN-301 (used) once more for my other rooms in the house and vacation home. Let me know when you have confirmed and tested the Moodie control interface for Allo Boss2/USB HD configuration. Thanks!!

There doesn't seem to be any venting, is there going to be an issue running RPi4 in a closed aluminum block or will it not matter as a streamer?

It’s vented from the bottom, I also had the same query but it seems to work but can't confirm long term durability as i have had it for a week only. I have played music continuously for more that 4hours without any glitches. 9D81A395-47E4-4723-ADDC-213697C90F27.jpeg

Tested with an 8GB usb thumb drive and it works flawlessly. If you want to control it from a long distance you might need to connect an external WiFi dongle. My testing was done with integrated WiFi of raspberry pi.

Yes most OS will allow you to play from local files . Yes all OS will allow you to play from local file with no internet .

On the bottom of Boss2 you can see a blue heat pad that's placed right under CPU , to transfer heat to the alu case the case is a heat sink)

We do not recommend to use the internal WIFI for audio files . Please get (or use any dongle compatible with RPI) a decent one from us and you will have excelent performance .

BT was tested and works well with Moode (not tested on other OS)

No. I know there are some efforts to reverse engineer it, but nothing so far .

Hello everybody,

Just registered to this informative website to ask a question regarding this neat little device and hope to get a response.

I'd like to know if the Boss2 is able to access my music library stored on a Synology NAS running Logitech Media Server. If yes, which software would you recommend to choose? Moode Audio or DietPi + Allo GUI?

-Elmar

I'm not yet convinced by a raspberry pi and allo digione using Volumio.
I'm sure it will be great, but for now I prefer the ease (and sound o_O) of the chromecast audio and HiFi-Cast app.
I cannot explain it other than the manual hassle I had with Volumio and the sharp sound which I don't like to listen to.
I know it should all be digital, but still.
I will check out some other software like Mo0de to see if I like that better.
Will also have the Topping Dx7 Pro next week; see how that fares with the raspbarry pi.
It might be the dodgy implementation of spdif in my dac (NAD C510)....or the fact that I am really charmed by good software.

Hi Elmar ,

welcome to ASR. You can use both . Also you can switch at any time between players..by flashing the card

Marc , the Hifi Cast app can also stream to upnp (all players on RPI have upnp end point)
