No dedication thread ? Well, that's just uncalled for......
Dude was a special human that created fantastic art.

Bit of a one trick pony though.

These days I find most of his stuff unlistenable because the lyrics are so gratingly and daftly juvenile - all that poxy and incoherent bullshit about rainbows, gypsies and wizards. And then the "spiritual" heaven/hell and devil crap. I'm not sure which of the two is the more cringe worthy - how seriously he took himself or how seriously his diehard fans think he was some kind of deep-thinking philosopher.

@GK. that's a bit harsh for a dedication thread... RJD was the voice of heavy metal along with Ozzy and Bruce Dickinson and I think few fans ever considered any of these "deep-thinking philosophers". The occultist flirting might put some folks off, but then you probably either didn't appreciate the genre at all, or maybe opted for Steyper's "Christian heavy metal" instead?

He did some interesting stuff in all the years he was active. Ronnie Dio and the Prophets was good old time rock and roll. On Roger Glover's The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast he did some truly beautiful vocals. Elf was a fun hard rock band initially using a piano instead of lead guitar. Then he did a little bit of gospel with Kerry Livgren of Kansas on Seeds of Change. He could carry a tune in his younger days and had an awesome growl also. The last live concert he did with Heaven and Hell was decent, although you could see he was struggling to belt out the vocals. In interviews he always sounded like a very down to earth person, totally opposite to his "evil" stage persona.

I'm dismayed at why you even responded to this post. It's telling. Me being a Christian man take offence to such retoric .. Most people on ASR are fairly careful with being offensive with such things, you obviously do not. please go away....

the Rainbow stuff was good too, great live footage to be had. I particularly like what he did for Kerry Livgren as it's an interesting story & excellent music. My favorite era is Rainbow followed by 1st 2 solo albums then 1st version Heaven & Hell

Due to minor ennunciation issues, for decades I thought his song was 'Rainbow in the Duck'.

Great rock singer though.
