That's a great word, and the definition you've quoted is entirely apropos to the topic. I think it's a good first half of the explanation of this subject.

The second half would be transmission chaining (aka Chinese whispers or telephone game):

Bartlett's pioneering book, Remembering describes a series of studies of transmission of various material, from Native American folk tales to descriptions of sporting events. From these he made two major inferences, corroborated by later studies: loss of the detail and dependence of the quality of remembering on the pre-existing knowledge. From these he inferred that remembering is a process of reconstruction of information, rather than of replication.

We can see both of these in play wrt Calvine: pattern-matching to the diamond shape as spacecraft, and transmission of increasingly elaborate layers to the story. While the initial evidentiary artefact (the photograph) was actual, the original framing and presentation of the incident (by the photographers to the media contact) was likely a deliberate hoax. The UFO sub-culture (including both believers and government operatives) then sequentially 'remember' and reconstruct specifics based on accepted analytic/narrative frameworks that inform their domains within the sub-culture (including 'threats' and 'coverups').

The Nick Pope video posted by Will is a nice example of the late-stage distillation of the chain. Consider his opening commentary:

... This is a case where two hikers were out walking in Scotland and they saw a large diamond-shaped craft hovering a short distance above the ground and they took some photographs and then this object shot off to the horizon at incredible speed. ...

Well, per the photo we can believe they saw a diamond shape. That's the end of the factual evidence of the incident. It wasn't a 'craft' and it didn't 'hover' in the flying sense, nor was it 'a short distance above the ground' (nonsensically, with a Harrier jet flying under it?) just on the apparent visual plane, and so on. The tropes of UFO sub-culture including 'shot off to the horizon' and 'incredible speed' (not to mention the later MiB stuff) are patterns of embroidery that participants fall into as they replicate well-worn narratives.

Why not recount facts as they are and then clearly separate the post-facto analysis? That's part human nature and part self-promotion. I stopped watching there as Pope is (or was) obviously a (deliberate or best-case hapless) fabulist. The axiom 'never let the facts get in the way of a good story' is an obvious principle.

I'm still pretty cautious about the alien explanation, but I think this topic deserves to be taken seriously. They've already released military tapes, pilot reports, and unexplained cases, so it's clear that these aren't just random people. I'd really like to see more complete radar and sensor data released instead of another short blurry clip. Which officially documented case do you find the most convincing?

I agree. In the end, I tend to doubt that NHI is here and is the culprit for UAPs. But, something is going on - where there is smoke there is fire. What that something is needs to be determined.

After following this topic for quite a long time now, I tend to think much of the claims are a combination of misidentifications, misunderstandings, hoaxers and liars.

But, I think a small subset of the reports may be due to natural phenomena we do not yet understand, and gaining an understanding will enhance our knowledge of nature.

I also think a small subset, e.g., sightings in and arround military and nuclear facilities, are due to unscrupulous actors, perhaps U.S. adversaries. Those potentially pose a national security risk, and definitely need to be investigated and counter-measures put in place to stop them.

Another small subset are due to sightings of secret advanced aerial weapons systems. Secrecy probably should be maintained, and UAP provide a distraction that works.

No-one saw little green men wandering around. But there's no credible - IMV - explanation to date and we're going back over 50 years now.

I don't think the official explanation is credible based on the available information. Of which there's quite a lot, it's been well documented and revisited over the years. I'd class it as a genuinely unsolved mystery; which doesn't mean that it's aliens, of course.
