How good is the AKG K612 Pro as a so labelled reference open back headphone?

Oluv compared it with the AKG K702 and preferred it.

It is relatively low in price and it seems that the nondetachable cable may be a reason why it is less popular because not everyone likes a 10 foot cable.

Is its sound of a comparable quality to some of the higher priced headphones in the the sub $250 range, eg. HD 599, DT880, DT990, Fidelio X2HR etc?

The AKG which is in the next band above is the AKG K712 which is compared Sennheiser HD 6XX series.

In short can I get much better phone that does what it does at its price range? I don't really mind the long non-detachable cable.

I'm currently trying out the HD599 and although it is comfortable the sound is good it doesn't sound "intense" or "present", like the Beyerdynamic DT-250/80 which is another one I'm trying out. That is one I will keep because I like the sound, but I find it presses too hard against my head.

It seems to have a rather loose bass for my liking, although I seem to be getting used it, ie the HD 599

Are you EQing the 599? They benefit immensely from EQing.

No, I haven't got into equalization yet. I use Linux and the VLC I currently for playing music doesn't support saving equalizer presets. Audacious does, but I need something more portable but convenient. I plan to look at other Linux video players and how well they support equalization.

The SE version is currently on Amazon for 89UKP which is about 120 USD and for that price it is well worth keeping. The not-in-your-head sound from its open back nature makes it quite easy to listen to.

I prefer the K612 over the K702. Maybe the differences are small when I look at this chart, but when I listened to both of these headphones, the K702 was much more shouty. Both headphones sound thin and lack sub-bass to be honest.

PulseEffects is a very good Linux EQ, and it combines well with Quodlibet, e.g..

It all (also) depends on what you like in headphones: if wide soundstages are important to you, K702 is definitely an option - and their comfort is good: wide earcups, lightweight - but, indeed, they are not (at all) bass monsters. Oratory's new K702 EQ works very well for me:

How is the soundstage of the K612 Pro compared to headphones known for their wide soundstage (K702, 560S or even the HD 598)?

I am returning a set of 612 Pro. I really wanted to like them and gave them a good test, but found they were too "soft" sounding. They were not as clear and precise and punchy as my Sennheiser 6xx. To me, it was like they were TOO open....sort of like the drivers were very light pillows that were barely touching your ears,. Soft? Airy? It is kind of hard to explain, but to me, these pair lacked any punch or dynamics. Some quieter tones got lost. They were very comfortable possibly partially due to the low clamping pressure.

Have you ever tried the HD 598s by any chance? I'd be curious to know how comparable (or not) they are.

I haven't tried those, but I have a set of HD6xx and HD6xx are much more detailed and dynamic then the AKG 612.

Thanks for the answer. I actually already own the HD58X but the soundstage (or whatever word people may prefer) isn't wide enough for certain genres. I wanted to know how it compares with the 598 that also has a wide-ish soundstage.
