AIYIMA S600 Review

There is an ugly peak of distortion centered on 400 Hz, a music rich area, likely to be very noticeable on voices too. A pass for me, even for desktop computer use, in spite of the low price.

One might wonder. AIYIMA can make good amplifiers but speakers are something else. Doesn't AIYIMA have a technically knowledgeable speaker designer on staff? Or can't they bring someone in on a consulting basis? Such a person could have pointed out the problem directly. A simple (not many parts, low order) cheap crossover would probably be enough to make the S600 speakers better and I'm not talking about top notch like Genelec, Neumann,AsciLab good FR but one for a $160 active speaker good FR.
Now it's up to DIY community to tinker with that instead. If they think the speaker has the potential to tinker with.
Besides the electronics, I believe AIYIMA is a driver & filter manufacturer: they have a quite extensive range available on Aliexpress of what appears to be entry level stuff.

Rephrasing the statement: if an OEM makes good drivers—assuming AIYIMA’s are any good, which I don’t know—is building speakers something else? They should have people knowledgeable about what driver & filter characteristics are needed to build a good speaker…

Remember this is one of their first efforts. Soon they may be offering edge of the art stuff for $500. Give them time.

I have this pair of speaker in my kitchen, got it for $60 a year ago.
It sounds good enough. I dialed down the treble knob to min.

After viewing this review, I checked my pair with a phone and the Spectroid app, and a sound frequency generator.
No abnormal distortion at 400 Hz.
Loud sound from the woofer around 4700 Hz.
However I don't hear the dip in 1600 Hz - 2000 Hz range.

Which is a good thing cos now you know you can't trust neither your phone nor your ears. ;)

I've seen Daiso earphones with similar frequency response...

This would be okay for a lowest-cost-possible but still generating acceptable FR type of product and price. Not USD$159.

180€/pair.
The closest good measuring alternative budget-wise I can think of with my limited knowledge are the JBL 305p mkII at 280€/pair and less connectivity options, and without remote of course, but they're way way better.
We also have Edifier MR5. In my country they cost around US$160, and they are way better

I'm sure Aiyima doesn't manufacture 90% of what they sell. At best, they redistribute Chinese OEM rebrands or factory stocks.
Most of those drivers don't have T/S parameters included, which is telling. Generic crossover filters, don't bother.

This guy made Aliexpress drivers work, so it boils down to getting the right drivers and good engineering to make good-sounding speakers...

Thanks!
Thanks Rick.

What an adorable little overbright in the treble, hollowed out in the midrange speaker! It's so cute and it has a big boy remote too! Guess this thread also tells us why we don't call the big bedroom the "master" anymore!
I still do and really don't care if anyone is offended. Intent is what matters, not the actual words.

Well it doesn't seem too smart to have your first attempt be like this...why not send some prototypes out for tech review and measurements like this, basically for free and then adjust accordingly??? First impressions are important.
