AIYIMA 800X Subwoofer Review

I bought two AIYIMA 800X subwoofers while they were on sale, mainly because I wanted to experiment with a small dual-subwoofer setup.
Have been testing them for a bit now, am still forming my final opinion, but there are already a few findings that may be useful to share.

The overall appearance of the subwoofer is quite nice, and the driver itself gives a reasonably good impression.
Enclosure, however, is fairly lightweight and certainly does not feel like one of the most rigid designs in this category, although its shape may help a little.
Overall, the build quality seems perfectly acceptable for the price, and I do not have any major complaints here.
It is also not very large, and because of the low weight it is easy to move around and handle.

The advertised power rating should be taken with some caution.
The included power supply is rated at only 24 V / 2 A, so the quoted 100 W isn´t that realistic.

For my own use, I cannot really complain about a lack of output. In fact, my problem is almost the opposite: I would like to be able to turn the subwoofer down further, but I will come back to that later.

I also did some simple near-field measurements with the LPF input selected, where the crossover appears to be fixed at its highest setting, around 250 Hz.
The measurements shown here are close-mic measurements of the driver, the port, and a rough combination of both, so they should not be interpreted as anechoic absolute SPL data.
Still, they give a useful impression of the tuning. The usable output is mainly in the 40–120 Hz region, with strong contribution around roughly 55–80 Hz. Below about 40 Hz the response falls very quickly, and I would not consider the advertised 30 Hz extension to be practically usable in this setup.

Using the normal L/R line input with the low-pass set to its maximum position gave broadly similar results to the LFE/LPF input.

The low-pass control on the normal L/R line input does work as expected. I measured it at three positions: minimum, roughly middle, and maximum. The maximum setting appears to be around 250 Hz, the middle position roughly around 150–160 Hz, and the minimum setting around 60 Hz.

The main problem I have found is that the 800X needs a certain signal level before it behaves properly.
At low levels the subwoofer barely contributes, at medium levels it only partially comes in, and only at higher levels does the response look normal. This suggests some kind of internal threshold, auto-on, noise-gate, or DSP muting behaviour. Whatever the exact cause, it makes the subwoofer less predictable at low listening or measurement levels.

Unfortunately, this cannot simply be worked around by feeding the subwoofer a hotter input signal and turning down the volume knob on the unit. In my tests, increasing the input level while reducing the subwoofer volume did not avoid the problem. The behaviour stayed essentially the same, as if the relevant signal detection or gate is happening after the volume control, or at least after some internal gain stage affected by it. In practice, this means that the subwoofer needs a certain actual operating/output level, not just a higher input voltage, before it behaves normally.

One more to show the problem (this corners shows always quite some bass boost, it´s extreme):

This level-dependent change in frequency response does not occur with my other subwoofers or with regular speakers measured in the same setup.

Old small DIY sub for comparsion, low volume 25%, and 75%, all ok.

So far, my impression is that the 800X is a useful little budget subwoofer, but with an important caveat.
It is compact, looks nice, has enough output for my needs, and the basic crossover functionality works.
However, it seems to need a certain operating level before it behaves properly.
At low levels the response changes significantly, which makes it unsuitable for very quiet listening or setups where predictable low-level behaviour is important.

AIYIMA A800X – MVSilicon DSP settings will not persist after power cycle


I opened the AIYIMA A800X subwoofer and found an internal USB-A port connected to its MVSilicon DSP. ACPWorkbench connects successfully and reads the running configuration.

The status line reports:
  • mvsilicon B1 usb audio CONNECTED
  • BPxx Audio Play SDK V0.5.15
  • Effect Library V2.40.1
The most suspicious active effect is:
  • Music Noise Suppressor
  • Ratio: 4
  • Threshold: −55 dB
  • Attack: 2 ms
  • Release: 100 ms
This likely explains the A800X’s level-dependent response and poor behaviour at low playback levels. Disabling the Noise Suppressor works immediately and survives ACPWorkbench Reset/Refresh.

However, it does not survive a complete power cycle. After disconnecting and reconnecting USB power, the original factory settings return.

I tried:
  • ACPWorkbench versions around 2.24 and 2.33
  • “Save Configuration to Flash”
  • Group Index 0 through 12

The dialogs complete without an error, but the modified parameters are never restored after power-up.

Has anyone worked with similar MVSilicon BPxx/B1 OEM firmware?

Is there another startup bank, boot-group setting or save command required, or does the AIYIMA firmware overwrite the DSP parameters with its factory configuration during every cold boot @AIYIMA ?
 
I got quite a bit further with this project.

I was able to reverse-engineer enough of the USB control protocol to control the BP1048B2 DSP directly. I used a small ESP32-S3, any microcontroller capable of acting as a USB host should work. Wi-Fi make the ESP32-S3 particularly convenient.

I installed one ESP32-S3 inside each subwoofer and connected it to the amplifier board through its existing USB-A port.
The DSP settings can now be controlled from a web browser :D.

The ESP stores the selected settings and reapplies them after every restart or complete power cycle. There is no need to save the settings to the DSP’s internal flash.

So far, it works exactly as intended.

The two most important changes were:

- disabling the Music Noise Suppressor / noise gate
- disabling Bass Enhanced inside the Virtual Bass module

The improvement is immediately audible. The subwoofers now behave normally at low listening levels instead of cutting in and out or requiring an unnecessarily high input level.

I have not explored every available setting yet. There is quite a lot to experiment with, including the configurable EQ slots and DRC. I will leave the compressor alone likely.

The BP1048B2 itself is a surprisingly capable audio SoC, with DSP and FFT acceleration integrated alongside its ADCs and DACs.

The main limitation was not necessarily the hardware, but the factory configuration and the lack of accessible controls.

The controller also contains experimental support for related MVSilicon/ACP-compatible boards by discovering their available effects dynamically. I have an older NVarcher board here, but that part has not yet been tested much. The AIYIMA A800X support is fully tested.

I also reinforced the lightweight enclosure with Alubutyl while i was at it.

There is still more listening and measuring to do, but the result is already very promising. With these modifications, the A800X has gone from being frustrating at low volume to being a genuinely usable little subwoofer.

For the price, and admittedly quite a bit of DIY effort in my case, I am very pleased with the result.

I paid €153 each on sale. The T5 was €129 at the time, although it dropped to €109 a few days later, at that price I probably would have bought the Edifier.

Performance-wise they should be in a similar class. The AIYIMA has a glass-fibre-reinforced cone and, more importantly for me, the BP1048 DSP. The Edifier also has DSP, but I would not expect to get access to its internal EQ, gate and compressor settings.

The T5 may well be the better “just plug it in and use it” product. The AIYIMA became much more interesting once I could disable the noise gate and Bass Enhanced, use the free EQ bands and control everything from a browser. That level of adjustability is normally found on more expensive app-controlled subs.
 
Great work! In effect you now have a wireless subwoofer with adjustable EQ for a very low cost, far lower than SVS for example.

I'd like to add that the "Virtual Bass" is just a normal bass boost filter. I always turn it off and use the PEQ for more flexibility.
 
Thanks! It has turned into a very nice little toy, and the browser-controlled PEQ is probably the most valuable part.

I only started listening more seriously today, but one thing is already clear: the Noise Suppressor has to be disabled. The electronics are quiet anyway, so there is nothing useful to suppress, and it only causes problems at low listening levels.

I first disabled only Bass Enhanced, then the complete Virtual Bass block. So far I prefer it that way. It sounds more like an effect than something I need, while the PEQ offers much better control.

I will probably leave the DRC alone for now. With its current 1:1 ratio, it is effectively doing nothing and may simply be intended as a configurable safety stage.

I still need to measure whether the factory EQ makes sense once these effects are disabled. I may create a cleaner PEQ correction, or simply handle most of the correction with the convolver in FXRoute, which already works very well.

So far, though, the improvement is obvious: the subwoofer now behaves normally even at low volume, and the amount of control is excellent for the price.

I checked the Edifier T5S again. Its DSP is apparently limited to crossover duties and does not offer adjustable EQ, so the accessible BP1048 in the AIYIMA is a real advantage.

I also think the factory EQ is quite odd. The LP is set at a pretty high point (500Hz?), a few PK filters here and there (probably to linearize the response), and a fast rolloff with 35Hz HP filter.

And I noticed just now the EQ profile is missing a few things. The DAC1 section of BP1048 should have delay and phase control settings (normal/reversed phase). Aiyima messed up and used the stereo output for subwoofer (DAC0)? Wtf?
 
You are right that the factory filter setup looks a bit unusual at first glance.

There are actually two low-pass filters, one around 280 Hz and another around 500 Hz. That sounds high for a subwoofer, but I do not want to call it wrong before measuring the individual contribution of each filter. They may simply be intended as additional suppression of upper-frequency content, while the actual crossover is expected to be handled by an AVR or another upstream device.

The 35 Hz high-pass filter is more questionable to me. The measured response drops very steeply below that point. looks quite conservative for a 8-inch subwoofer, but I need to make controlled measurements with the relevant filters enabled and disabled before drawing a final conclusion.

Regarding DAC0 versus DAC1, I would also be careful before calling it a mistake. The 800X is a mono subwoofer, so as long as the selected DAC path is connected to the amplifier and provides the required processing, using the stereo DAC path is not necessarily a problem. The available effects depend on the firmware signal graph, not only on the DAC block itself.

I have already found the 0/180° phase control, but I have not added it to the web interface yet because the 800X already has a physical phase switch. It would still be easy to add... or i am mixing some things up with the NVarcher now and there is no phase. Edit: yes i did, it was early Aiyima don´t have phase control nor delay avaiable, NVarcher does and can be used.

For my own setup, delay and fine alignment are already handled more precisely/bidirectional by FXRoute, but it could still be useful for other users.

More info to add: the F0 280 Hz LPF is the one which is on the crossover dial on the back. I have it full right in this case, so that's the 280 Hz.

Effect list 3, which looks like it's made for subs, even if it´s called "mic", doesn't offer delay either.
I messed up, as the Aiyima has a phase available, set to 180 degrees by default.

Added that feature as well as the virtual bass classic (just to try it, not use it).
The generic board has a delay to offer, which is included there also now.
 

Close-proximity measurements and first custom EQ attempt​


I made a few close-proximity measurements today, with the microphone roughly 10 cm from the driver. The bass reflex port was not included in the measurement, so the curves do not show the complete output of the subwoofer; the port starts contributing noticeably at around 60 Hz.

The Noise Suppressor was disabled in all measurements, since it interferes with the sweep and makes the results unreliable.

Curve overview:
  • Light green: Factory settings — Virtual Bass, Bass Enhancement and Pre EQ enabled
  • Magenta: Bass Enhancement disabled
  • Turquoise: Virtual Bass disabled, which also disables Bass Enhancement
  • Purple: Virtual Bass, Bass Enhancement and Pre EQ disabled
  • Yellow: My current custom EQ settings
The factory configuration adds a very large amount of output through the mid- and upper-bass region. Disabling Bass Enhancement already makes a substantial difference, while disabling Virtual Bass reduces it further.

For my custom preset, I left F0 at 280 Hz and F1 at 500 Hz, since I use an external 80 Hz crossover anyway.

Current changes:
  • F2: HP, 30 Hz, Q 0.8
  • F3: PK, 55 Hz, +1.5 dB, Q 3.5 — retained from the original tuning
  • F4: PK, 81 Hz, −3.5 dB, Q 7.1
  • F5: PK, 49 Hz, +3 dB, Q 2.5
  • F6: PK, 39 Hz, +5 dB, Q 5.0
This is still a work in progress, and the missing port contribution needs to be kept in mind when interpreting the lower-frequency response. However, so far I prefer this tuning quite clearly to the factory configuration. It sounds less exaggerated and more controlled, while still retaining useful low-frequency output.
