Many years ago I worked for a group called Soundcom/AEI Music. We delivered music to airlines and retail groups, often attempting to create a unique feel and environment for that brand. We spent a lot of time on the programming of the music and as you can imagine 30 years ago that was pretty labour intensive. Outside of work and long after my time there I would spend an inordinate amount of (enjoyable) time programming my own playlists for parties and events etc... I have maintained an interest in in the way music services have attempted to program user specific track selection (Spotify seems to do it best) and I am particularly keen to see how this space evolves as it has been.

I am interested in anyones experience with Ai generated playlists and whether anyone has tried an app that seems to really nail it across genres? I have not found one yet but here is my own ranking: 1: Spotify. 2: Tidal. 3: Apple Music. I am hoping to see some improvement in the Apple Music Ai with the release of iOS 18.

Ha, yes indeed we did have quite a few customers who bought the Muzak product. We did not program that, we received it from Muzak on a few different systems depending on what was installed at the customer site and distributed it accordingly (My Apologies....:)). The programming I had a particular interest in was for retail & commercial groups like GAP, Oroton, Jeans West, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Just Jeans etc....

Now you mention it I am guessing Muzak would also have some interest in Ai although I am not sure if it is still around as a brand these days....

The last research I saw (a couple of years back? I can't find it now unfortunately) suggested streaming sites' automatic playlists performed fairly well for mainstream music, but rapidly got worse as genres got less popular / more niche. That probably explains why I haven't had much luck with any of them.

It probably depend on how fussy you are. I know many radio stations that play music spend a lot of time and effort researching demographics and applying a music style to that but it is still a broadshot approach. That seems to suit a lot of people.

I am excited for the technology that will play new artists and tracks based on preferences I have displayed in my listening history. Oner of the best parts of the music programming activities I used to be a part of was the exposure to new music (that I enjoyed).
