Affordable Accuracy Monitor Review

i think it could work , but i'm no expert..... @ryanosaur would probably know for sure...

After listening to your opinions and thinking hard, I decided to buy this because I think the most similar thing to denim insulation sold in Korea is insulation made from recycled clothing.
The thickness is 0.4" in inches and it is 35.5"X393.7" 19.22$.
I'll have a lot left over after I use it, but they don't sell it in a smaller size than this, so I decided to go with this.
Thanks for your help and answers.
The speakers are used and I spoke with the seller and will pick them up next weekend.
It will probably take me a month to buy the parts and modify them.
I'll leave a review after I do.

This is where DIY truly is fun and exciting. You can pick any components and try them. All would work. :)

I just finished one speaker; it took too bloody long. The curved sides would constantly have drip marks. I had to cut the poly 50/50 with paint thinner and apply extremely light coats. It took about a million coats to build it up high enough. I used high gloss polyurethane, Varathane brand. Wet sanding the orange peel was also tricky, but I got it done.

That's awesome, man. I've put together a couple of these as gifts and wish they looked half as good. The looks now match the sound quality. Great job!

@Dennis Murphy you have to take a look at this!

Hello from Canada!

I would like to mod a pair of used Pioneer SP-BS22's that I have acquired.

Could somebody please link me the best or most updated version? Perhaps direct me to where I can find some good quality parts as well.

Many Thanks!

just gotta look sliiiightly harder - it's at the bottom of the first page of this thread:

Just curious, is it possible to throw in EQ to make them even better?

it will be difficult to "improve" the presentation much, but based on the spins they are eq-able ....the area between 2k-4k hz less so...

Something I’m curious about: I know the kit version of this used a more expensive Morel tweeter, I assume this required a modification to the mod/crossover? If so, how different would the mod be?

Also, has anyone attempted to modify the Atmos add ons for the pioneers? I’m curious if the shared parts with the bookshelf speakers and if it would be possible to modify the sp-T22LRs to match the modded AAAs. Probably not worth it and a leap in logic to assume but it might be fun.

Dennis made different AAM's over the years. If I'm understanding your question I think the one with the Morel was a completely original, from-the-ground-up speaker that Dennis made, not a modification to the Pioneers. I think the Pioneers only ever got used in the version in this thread, which uses a Vifa/Peerless tweeter. As far as those height speakers, you would have to take them apart to see what their design is. It's basically like starting from scratch all over again since the housing geometry and possibly the drivers are different.

Mostly correct. The Pioneer mod used a $13 Vifa tweeter as a replacement for the truly awful tweeter in the stock Pioneer BS-22. The much more expensive (currently over $100) Morel was used in an upgraded version of my mod for the Parts Express BR1 kit. I never offered a ground-up design using the Morel. The Morel was a drop-in replacement for the Parts Express Dayton "Silky," which is the only reason I used it. Both the Silky and the Morel have an oversized 110 mm flange. (The Silky is actually a reverse-engineered version of the Morel.) I sure wish there were a factory someplace "over there" with a pile of unsold and long-since discontinued BS-22's.

Thanks for responding Dennis! I’ve been following your work for a while and actually am planning on doing the mod for fun with the center channel since someone is getting rid of those in my area.

This was basically what I figured. I haven’t found a teardown online and the only info I can find is in a stereo net post where someone says they have. A “4” structured surface woofer [and] a ½” high efficiency soft dome tweeter” which doesn’t really give me anything to work with. If I come across a few cheap ones in my travels or someone else does I’d like to see what’s inside.

Follow-up: bought someone's old SP-BS22-LRs (for a second time actually, my friend has my old ones and I may upgrade those) and they had a SP-C22 as well. I have already bought the parts to do the mod.

I am aware that as Dennis and others have brought up earlier, the SP-C22 is a more compromised speaker at least for its intended purpose. I am going to need a center channel so finding one that is similarly voiced to the AAM's is going to be a must, and I am tempted to just do the C22 accuracy mod, under-documented and flawed though it is. I know it's the same tweeter swap, and as far as I can tell this is the most complete documentation of what the mod was supposed to be. If done well, at the very least, it will be a better speaker than it was and at worst it will be broken. Worst case, a quick and dirty list of good center channel speakers to pair with these would be helpful.

Dennis's full mod to the C22 is, afaik, unpublished, but used to exist at one time.

I don't know whether you'll be able to read the schematics, but this is the C22 mod. I don't believe I ever said the stock C22 was the most compromised of the Pioneer line. It actually had the smoothest and most most consistent measurements. But the stock tweeter lacked clarity, as it did on all of the Andrew Jones Pioneer models, and this was probably most apparent on dialog.

Thanks for that Dennis. I actually already have the center and an additional tweeter coming in for it (I wanted a backup since the only place that sells it now seems to be digikey). I will probably do the mod even though MTMs are not ideal but I need to parse through the crossover design and BOM
