Adjust volume on active speakers plugged into TV?

I want to use a pair of active powered speakers on my TV (Kali LP8v2). My TV - TCL C855 - has optical output, but when connected over optical it won't let me change the volume via the TV remote.

That means I need a DAC that has the following:
  • Optical or HDMI eARC input
  • Remote control
  • RCA output
Even better if it has balanced analog output, aptX Adaptive support or DLNA support, but not essential.

I'm thinking about a WiiM Pro Plus - will this let me change the volume via its remote? I can set the speakers to 50%-70% (which is far too loud imho) and then control the volume from the WiiM Pro to my liking? If not, what device would people recommend, or how would people suggest I set up my TV so I can use the active speakers and adjust the volume without getting off the couch!

Yes but it's not 100%, sometimes the zd3 powers back on by itself after shutting off the TV. It doesn't bother me but might be annoying. It works OK for volume, my wife can easily use it which was the reason I got it. She listens to YouTube music mostly. Our TV is tcl as well. I would go for the wiim if you want streaming though.

Thank you for the first hand experience! I don't really need it for streaming, just TV stuff, so I think the ZD3 should be what I get. It's AU$200 on eBay right now, so the price is right.

The Topping E30 II Lite is all you need for that use case. I got it for my grandma's TV for about $72 on AliExpress about a year ago.

Your TV has a headphone jack. Why not try connecting that to your speakers with a cheap 3.5mm to RCA adapter? Typically you can adjust the headphone jack's volume with the TV remote. I don't know how good your TV's internal DAC is but it's worth a try.

Unfortunately, it does not. Would make my life easier if it did! Still tossing up between the Fosi ZD3 ($210) or a Wiim Pro & Remote ($239). Leaning towards the Wiim Pro as it can also stream music with the TV off which is handy.

I use the wiim pro + with a TCL via optical & it works as it should. I run all volume control from the Wiim remote. There app is pretty cool, has PEQ &Graphic too. I actually run digital directly into AES3 of my speakers but it also works fine with no hum on my TT rug off the RCA's.

On my tv all dsp controls (eq, limiter, sound modes) are disabled when the headphone jack is used.
