Active Room Treatment (ART) by Dirac

With 125Hz F-support Low set on the speakers, does the distortion come out of the speakers or the subwoofer(s) or both?

I tried really hard to isolate the distortion to just one speaker, or set of speakers, but I couldn't. It seems most audible when all the speakers are playing together, and also most noticeable at MLP.

The main takeaway I've discovered through testing is that I hear distortion even when playing the music through headphones. That means it's a DSP induced distortion, not a distortion created by the chain to and through speakers.

Have you tried the F-support Low set to 125Hz on all speakers and subwoofers?

Why do you think the distortion you hear is at 40Hz?
Are you sure it isn't actually at a higher frequency?

I tried F-support Low set to 125Hz on all speakers and subwoofers. Distortion still there. The subs are neutered a great deal at that F-support, so the amplitude of the distortion seems to be reduced.

I'm not certain about the frequency. I imported one of the songs where I could hear distortion into Ableton, and threw a spectrum analyzer on it to try and pinpoint the offending frequencies. It's definitely kick drum range with max amplitude around 40Hz- 50Hz, but the spectrum is spread out from there at lower volumes so I can't be sure.

I had the same issue around 85Hz. It was because Dirac tried to fill a sharp null that I have on my subwoofers and front speakers due to placement. Look at your filters, if you see a sharp correction at 40hz, you need to modify your target curve -5dB or so for that area.

What is the support level set to? Did you customize the target curves?

Great idea @temeq . I’m looking more closely at the filters to try and spot a problem. Some of them don’t make any sense to me, so I’m still trying to figure them out. I attached images of them in hopes someone else may spot an issue. It’s a 2.2 system, so there are four filters per main speaker. The measured (uncorrected) response of the main speaker is also in each image. All Dirac settings were left at default values except the target curves were zeroed.

Is there any chance you have a input for a source. I had the same issue with no speakers last week. Bottoming out but can't spot the speakers. Took all support to 6db. Still bottomed out. I then remembered I had jacked a line to a Nivida Shield. (streaming was fine but 50TB of locally stored movies/ TV were always way lower in volume on the Shield. I jacked the digital input to the shield 6db.

I found dirac ignored the 6db increase in test Tones. I was running a 8db Harmon curve. 8db plus the 6db source jack was the issue 12db overall. I took the 6 db input jack down to 0 and it fixed the bottoming issue. Worth a look at any related input or output Jack's are well.... Jacked. Good luck.

If you tried all support level already, then it is not the issue. May be try a new calibration, and use lower mic and speaker level this time.

Hello!
I'm just writing to let you know that my contract with Dirac ends at the end of this month.
I therefore send you my warmest regards and wish you excellent listening pleasure!
All the best :)
Flavio
merci pour tout!

Can you show the measured response of those 2 subs, dirac screenshot just like above? Wondering if one or both have issues around 40Hz where they are being used to boost the mains. Sub 2 is always boosting in every screen shot at 40Hz so I'd look there first. The boost doesn't look excessive (looks to be around +3db) but if they (it) are (is) coming from say -10db down at 40Hz and being tasked with boosting for the mains that could cause issues I would imagine. Also, your mains have good in room response to 35Hz (ish), you could try moving the FS low on the mains from the default 50Hz to 40Hz and check the new filters to see if that takes some of that load off of the subs, I would think it would. I know it is the opposite of what you tried already but it's worth a quick test. To quickly negate that sub 2 boost if desired lowering the support level on sub 2 from -18 to say -12 (or -6 if needed) on all speakers it supports should bring that filter line down to or below the 0db line. Start with -12 and calculate and then look at the filters. Sub 1 is always boosting a little above 100Hz so it could be there as well, same thing applies as what i suggested for sub 2 but you could also try a curtain for sub 1 at 100Hz (if it is the problem and it goes away with say a -6 support level). Hopefully you are using the dirac "screenshots" and relabeling them to match what you have uploaded into your filter slots, that allows you to quickly flip back and forth to see filter differences.

Hi folks. I’ve been using ART for a month or so now and have a few questions. I really wish Dirac had easily accessible tech support so I could better understand best practices. If they do, please let me know. Ok a couple starting questions. I’m running a 7.3.6 setup. I’ve attached my REW waterfall which “I think” looks pretty good.

1) I’m simply using Dirac’s default curves. They are all slightly different below 150hz depending on the channel. I’ve also loaded a Harman +4 curve in the past. My question is what’s best practice? I’m assuming Dirac’s default curves are somewhat optimized or they wouldn’t be the default? Is there a downside to running these slightly different below 150hz Dirac default curves?
2) I struggle with clear clean dialog. I know with Audessey there were different tools a person could use such as dialogue enhancer, dynamic volume or simply adjusting the trim level. I don’t see those options with Dirac only the choice of designing a custom center curve. My question is if I use the default Dirac center curve and I raise the entire curve by 3db to simulate bumping the Center trim level by 3db is there any downside or would this break the calibration in any way given the Center is used as the timing reference for LFE?

That’s it “for now”. Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks folks

That works, raising it outside of Dirac does not recalculate so it's not taking into account all the supporting speakers.

Thanks, sorry just to clarify if you are answering question #2, are you suggesting raising the entire Center curve by say +3db and allowing Dirac to then recalculate has no ill effects even given the fact they the Center is used as a timing reference for LFE. Others have noticed the LFE seems to be more boomy after raising the entire Center by X db and then allowing Dirac to recalculate. If you could please clarify it would be appreciated. Thanks again

Does your AVR/AVP have a center channel trim/gain that is operable with ART engaged? For me, dialog clarity was improved with ART, but I have occasionally raised the center channel to compensate for dialog too soft in the source media. My AVP has a level control on the remote for that purpose.

Yes, It needs to be done in dirac but raising it may make things more boomy. I sometimes roll of the highs just on the center which can often help clarity of dialog.

Here, It's AI but has been mentioned many times (non Ai). I would not do all 3 at once, for me the roll off and slight bump 1khz to 3 or 4 kHz is what I landed on. Boosting the whole channel just rasied the boom and made thins worse.

__________

Create a custom target curve: In the Dirac Live filter design stage, apply a slight boost of 2 to 3 dB in the 1kHz to 3kHz range for the center channel. This is the exact frequency range where human speech intelligibility lives.Filter Design Adjustments: You can specifically design a steeper roll-off in the lower frequencies of your center channel (e.g., crossing it over higher at 80Hz or 100Hz) to prevent low-end movie rumbles from muddying voices.

Customize the Target Curve: Go to the Dirac Live Target Curve editor. You can click and drag the top end of the curve for the center channel so that it gently slopes down starting at your desired roll-off frequency. This prevents the high-frequency harshness that occurs when a perfectly flat curve is used in untreated rooms.

Thanks. I’m running a Marantz Cinema 30 and Marantz just turned off the ability to raise the trims in its new FW so I have not updated to the latest FW yet. That’s why I’m trying to better understand if I can just raise my entire Center target curve with no ill effect.

Thanks that’s what I have done in my custom center curve but still find increasing the trim level +3db helps. Marantz is taking away the trim level functionality so just trying to find another way to simulate it.

Do you have slots for different Dirac filters? You could duplicate your Dirac filter, then make one of them with an increased center channel level for when it is needed.
