Active Room Treatment (ART) by Dirac

Could I use Genelec GLM for FR and timing, but then add the subwoofer magic of Dirac Art on top?

Don't see a reason why not. But then ART will change some things that GLM did before. Hopefully for the better.

Theoretically it is not the best practice to layer multiple DSPs, but GLM might work better in higher frequencies than Dirac Live so can put a curtain after ART range and let GLM ride above that. It is an interesting topic so please let us know how it ends up.

So I promised to do some measurements and listening of Dirac ART in my living room 2ch setup (using my x3800H pinched from my home cinema).

For reference I am running Audio First Cadentia 3 Speakers.

As to how it sounds... F*cking nuts! With Dirac Live things are good, but the sound seems to stay at the front wall, and seems 'squashed' in comparison. When I switch between the 2 the difference is massive. It's like my speakers have grown and are 'set free'.

The other great news is that I really don't think I need any subs in my room to improve on this. Sooooooooo... Just need to wait for a 2ch device to come out with support for ART. Or go in for an AVR where I don't need the vast amount of the features... Hmm!

Interesting how your bass starts to roll off below 27 Hz. What could cause that?

I think it's to do with the F-support low value I have. My in room response with the speakers is down to 20Hz... But I have them set to 25Hz just because I'm worried! My speakers have an F3 of 41Hz, but I'm getting a lot of room boost, so 25Hz even concerns me slightly.

Maybe I'll lower to 20Hz and see what happens.

FYI, with the default low of 50Hz it literally rolled off my system at 50Hz... Obviously because I wasn't running a sub.

That one was up to 500Hz. I have now got it running up to 1kHz... Haven't measured yet, but vocals sound more forward... Better.

Shame I've got to take it back up to the cinema room! Like right now! Got some mates coming over tonight... Gonna miss this. Can't be arsed to keep bringing it up and down!

Sounds like you need to buy another unit :p

I’m currently correcting to 1khz. I feel no drive to change it. It sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to get multiple subs going though.

Like you Iam hanging out for a 2-channel ART device, but might just wait till it comes to PC.
The current cheapest option is still another X3800 + Dirac licences. The miniDSP Tide 16 is enticing.

I am planning to build a 7.1.4 system with the Kef Reference 1 Meta as the main speakers which i also use for music listening. The Reference 1's are high end ported speakers and due to space constrains i am currently using a Kef KC 62 which is a small sealed sub. The Reference 1's ports are tuned at 40hz and are generally very well designed. I would like to run the speakers full range alongside the sub for more even bass distribution in the room. I fear i might degrade the sound quality if i use a sealed sub together with these speakers in terms of phase and group delay or in other ways i cant think of. Does any one here have insight if ART is able to handle ported speakers with a sealed sub and can correct for any potential issues?

FWIW, I inadvertently used DLBC atop Neumann MA-1 in my desktop system in our old house — simply forgot to turn off MA-1 on the KH 120 IIs! But it was fine. Neither one really did anything to the MF/HF (as expected with basically perfect speakers) and there weren’t crazy compound upper bass boosts that drove things into the limiters.

So, maybe not ideal—but fine.

IME, no issue. Many of us use ported mains and closed box subs.

However, what may be an issue is the highly tailored level-and-frequency-dependent limiting baked into your particular sub. Issue is the subwoofer response at different levels will be different from what Dirac measures at its single level.

I appreciate the reply. From what I have found the dynamic level and distortion control in the KC62 is mainly used to optimize output and control distortion when the sub is reaching its limits but I am not sure, can’t find any more info. Usually I use it within its limits so I hope its not an issue.

DIRAC art requires everything set full range without crossover?

It doesn’t use a crossover but you define full range or what range each speaker can contribute.

I’ve been taking everything the room gives me. I do have to carefully ensure my support settings are ok (no boosts works) because I like loud. I have everything separated so for each speaker I use all of the measured response for each speaker for itself it that makes sense (mains are 25 and 27Hz, surrounds 36 and 40Hz). I mostly don’t give all of that range for support of others, mainly because Dirac doesn’t take it when I’ve offered it up. I was not doing that for awhile and being a little conservative (40Hz for the mains and 50 for the others) but the most recent Joss Walker interview with some guy named Joe he said he takes it all so I do now too.
