Active Room Treatment (ART) by Dirac

No "Atmos speakers" here - the height speakers are Gallo Nucleus Micro's little balls... mounted high up. they need bass support badly! reflecting Atmos speakers won't work with the steeply angled cathedral ceiling...

I consciously toned down quite a few support settings to 12 from the default of 18 to maximise localisation, but I need to do a lot of experimentation to see what ends up working best (and suiting my tastes best).

I need to do some room reorg to open up a space for the 2nd sub - and given my current results, I am not convinced that I have all that much to gain...

Still, indubitably, I will need to try it out! (it has been waiting for an appropriate bass management system for some years!)

With sub and 2 mains reaching down to 24Hz, and the surrounds reaching down to 35Hz - do I really need another sub?! (keeping in mind that I tune the bass for flat as my preference, not boosted)
I think you do. Not even sure if ART will not override your support settings if you extend them too low.

If you have some graphs, that would help.

Well, this was my first try.... the Siren call could not be resisted!

Keep in mind that I was previously on a +4 / -1 (roughly) target curve, BUT I was also using the tone control to turn down the bass -8... not sure whether that matches to db in any way though.

So really I should have reduced the bass shelf quite a bit ages ago! (on Dirac Live RC)

Also I have been using 4 full range speakers with the AVR set to double bass - so the bass management was distributing the LFE to the full range speakers as well as bass + LFE to the sub so I was effectively using 5 subs in differing locations, which would have evened up the room in any case - I suspect this is another reason why there is less impact than I was expecting.

I really do recommend full range speakers for people - if you have the room for them, or if you find appropriately compact ones (the way I have!)
ry watching a movie with the LFE +12 dB shelf as soon as you can!
It can be hit-or-miss with things like Hans Zimmer music videos, though, since some of them mix musical content into the LFE channel (lol).

Large subwoofers really are the best!
I’m glad to hear that your ART setup on the X3800H went well.
I saw your posts about the Blade in another thread — are you using them in this setup?
If you don’t mind, I’d love to see a photo.
I did change the front speakers , they are very dynamic with low distortion as they are active with 1250w and 101db of sensitivity, the blade performed very well as well , but I had to monetize and they are for sale , I got 2 18 inch ported subwoofer too and 2 others will be added soon

These look very interesting. What are those?

I was missing movement and I got that back last night. I separated my 5 speakers into their own groups and both subs as well. I supported the left side with left side speakers and vice versa. Center not supporting anything but supported by all. I set both subs to support at -24 in all situations and enabled the 20hz bypass everywhere except the center. All speakers are supporting themselves at -24 as well and then I have the rears supporting fronts at -18 and vice versa. Once again I thought I had it pretty good with Audyssey and directional bass. Now the envelopment in 2 channel is about the level I had with atmos (no heights so not really “atmos” but atmos) and audyssey. I swear my rears are playing, it’s so awesome! Atmos/multichannel is just nuts now, the movement around the room is wild. In one of the guides I read (giomania) there was discussion of directional bass, I basically followed the advice and I’d say it’s spot on.

The drivers are used, but did you build the enclosure yourself?
@smygolf Some amazing person just showed up!

Need to spin up rew ...

High sensitivity Big woofers, a lot of watts - My kind of guy :)
I don not have any experience of BMS coax but their woofers are Great !
18N862 and JBL2269 has the same perfomance and can be dropped in 4645C.
But BMS are cheaper and a newer driver.

Fun fact is that 18N862 can also be used for IB installations.

I made a lightweight list of people who seem to be using or enjoying ART, based on kawauso’s casual observations.
If you’d like anyone added or removed, feel free to let me know.
The real issue isn’t whether one likes Dirac ART or not. Clearly they have aced it with this one. But these receivers we buy and fully own already have the linear FIR taps MIMO capable filter slots built into them, yet those slots are locked exclusively for Dirac. If their DSP is really that good, why not let users try creating their own calibrations and compare to that of Dirac's? One can then happily choose to pay for it whatever the price.
We all know what happened with Audyssey after (and with massive effort) we could have access to their "exclusive" filter slots...It's a sad joke that as owners we only have access to a basic 5-band graphic EQ (not even parametric EQ) and they even block that for the subwoofer so as not to risk any good manual results by making bass calibration impossible. That was what as consumers we had for nearly 2 decades.
Corporate gatekeeping is very real, and unfortunately there are still some dedicated voices that relentlessly defend it and pile onto the few people who try to challenge it and make things better for users.

Respectfully, please remove me from the spreadsheet. I understand the list may seem “harmless” but I do not see the value in you tracking who you think enjoys ART.

I believe it far more polite to start a poll on a new thread. No need to track individual’s responses and list them. It’s unsettling, to be honest.

Added! Everyone else on the list was added based on my own observations, so you’re actually the first person to join voluntarily haha.
I’ve seen your interesting posts in the other ART thread as well, so if you’d like, it would be great to hear more about your experiences here too.

Happy to hear you found my initial experience with ART interesting to read! I am not sure how much value I can add with a Follow-up on my experience with ART but I can gladly do it. The most interesting part is probably the choice of putting all four subwoofers at the front wall instead of spreading them out in the room and why this works so much better for me. Not sure when I will find the time to write a little bit about it. Maybe tomorrow, we will see. :)

Measurements are important, but I completely agree that listening should be the final judge.
It also makes sense that you switch between full-band correction and correction up to 300 Hz depending on the content.
Your setup with all four subs placed along the front wall sounds both unique and visually impressive.
I’m looking forward to reading more details tomorrow.
