Active monitors with an active subwoofer

I have an extra subwoofer and I would like to add it to some active studio monitors that I use for low volume music while at my desk. I want to make sure I am not doing something that seems like it will work on the surface, but ends up causing issues.

The main speakers are Alesis M1 Active 320 USB speakers that I output to with a 1/8 inch/3.5 mm stereo audio cable. As the name implies, the Alesis speakers have an integrated amplifier. These speakers get a lot of daily use and sound decent with the exception of having very limited low end. I have an extra Pioneer SW-8MK2 subwoofer that I would like to add, which is also an active speaker with and integrated amp. From my searching it's difficult to find an audio interface that takes a standard audio cable input and outputs either 2x stereo or stereo plus a sub out. There are some options I could use but they are a lot of money that would be better spent elsewhere. Can I simply split the 1/8 audio output to 2x 1/8 outputs then convert each 1/8 output to RCA, with one set going to the Alesis speakers and one set going to the Pioneer subwoofer? I wasn't sure if this would cause voltage/impedance issues or not.

The subwoofer has a crossover built in, so sending full range audio to it shouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately I won't be able to cut off the low frequencies sent to the Alesis speakers with this type of setup, but I'm not terribly concerned with that.

Thanks!

Hi @metload2! Welcome to ASR.

You can indeed connect both the speakers and the subwoofer to a single 3.5mm output via simple splitter cables.

This is unlikely to cause issues related to impedance or voltage.

If it has full-crossover with high-passed line-outputs, perfect!

Otherwise, not ideal but it still might sound better with the sub than without.

You can find 5.1 & 7.1 soundcards (including USB versions) and I assume the software/drivers can be configured as 2.1 with a crossover/bass management.

Unfortunately the Alesis monitors don't have a high pass filter or line/sub out options, nor does the subwoofer have a line out of any type. That would make things easier. Fortunately the subwoofer has a low pass filter.

I had considered the Creative Sound Blaster X4 for this type of setup but I got a bit turned off when I read software/driver complaints. I would rather put that money towards a nice set of passive bookshelf speakers down the road. I also looked at the FiiO D03K but it only takes coax and optical inputs.

As @staticV3 noted, you can use splitter cables to get signal to both main speakers and sub. That's what I did with my desktop system. REW can help fine tune and find an approproate crossover frequency for the sub (only), whch I assume would be dialed in via the subwoofer.

What is REW?

Thanks! That is really cool. I knew about Audyssey but I had not heard of this.

My splitter cables are on the way. Down the road I may get some better bookshelf speakers with larger drivers and a separate amp, but for now I am looking forward to getting this sub setup.

I appreciate all the info!

miniDSP has a very nice list of guides, all about speaker measurement and optimization using Room EQ Wizard: https://www.minidsp.com/applications

Looking at the miniDSP website I saw the miniDSP 2x4 HD which is very tempting for my use case. A bit more than I had planned to spend on this setup but the value is there, as opposed to a consumer level sound card. Looks like I can run USB out from my computer, then output to both the active monitors and active sub with lots of options for tuning. Plus I could still use this with an amp and passive speakers in the future.
