Hi there,

New to the community here and was hoping to get some feedback on a concern I have.

I ordered 10 acoustic panels (2x4x3) for my home studio (just for mixing) and on closer inspection, I see that the fabric used to house the rockwool is a 10oz canvas duck fabric. When I try to blow through it, it is fairly resistant to air passing through. From my research, this could be an issue with high end absorption as the sound waves will reflect too easily. Some argue it is not a big deal while others are addamant the material must be breathable. At the risk of spending over 500$ to re-wrap them myself in a more porous material, I thought I'd ask here if people think that would be worth it or not. Part of me thinks the difference would be negligible, but how would I ever know without comparing both? It's a project I've been excited to do for many years so I'd like to get it right. I'd appreciate your insights. Thanks.

Place a piece of that (or similar) fabric in front of your measurement mic and take a reading.

Welcome to ASR!

As @RayDunzl points out, you can check the effect of the fabric pretty simply using a mic.

The denser / less breathable the fabric, the more it will tend to reflect high frequencies.

This might not be a bad thing, it's possible to over-absorb HF with absorbent panels. Sounds like you have 80 square feet of 3" thick rockwool? Depending on the room and how things are placed, this might be more than enough to tame HF.
