I recently became aware of a local product that's sparked my interest, it's an acoustic PET carpet, about 2cm deep, 190 x 290cm:

My setup is not a dedicated one, it's a small open plan living-room but I've done everything I can while maintaining partner approval to improve the acoustics:

Even the couch is packed with Knauf Ecobatt :)

I think the system sounds good and the measurements are fair:

However, the response at my listening position is elevated in the midrange (LS50 Metas with 3 subs - EQ'd from 200Hz down only):

I've tried reducing the rise through EQ, but it sounds better/more natural to me as is. There's no more I can do to the room within the bounds of good taste, but this carpet has me thinking. It's not cheap, so to buy one just to experiment seems excessive. My concern is that it won't be all that effective in the region I'm looking to target and rob the high end of too much energy.

My gut tells me it's probably not a good idea, but my curiosity often gets the best of me. Any thoughts from those with more insight into room acoustics than myself`?

If you are really interested, I would reach out and ask for acoustic absorption figures. In other words, how much attenuation at which frequencies.

There may be cheaper alternatives, such as thermal insulation solutions that you place under a carpet (and will also reduce certain frequencies.

I’ve queried them, lets see what they come back with.

I do have automotive acoustic lining placed underneath the carpet currently.

I’ve had a nosey through the website and as far as I can see they have zero third party independent test data on the sound absorption coefficient of their stuff, and the rugs are merely thick/dense New Zealand wool, or PET cheaper styles.

Buy if you like the design but I imagine you’d have more effect by sticking wool in your ears, they look pointless and ineffective to me

Your room looks very good today. I would doubt PET fiber for this application. Usually I have used jute fiber pads, or as needed, mass loaded vinyl. Your automotive acoustic lining is a good approach.

I heard back from the company today. Their response was friendly and thoughtful, but boils down to them not having done any testing on their rugs - guided instead by general principles.

I’ll give this a miss for my purposes, something for my wife’s home office perhaps.

Thank you all for the feedback!
