Accuphase DP-70 Review (CD Player)

If you cut the edge off the CD with the CD lathe ( yes this really existed) then the CD became almost as good as an SACD, though obviously not as good as vinyl which obviously was not quite as good the ‘phonograph’ (wax cylinders).

Thank you NTTY for such a thorough and entertaining review.
In case it may be of interest to anyone, there is a DP-70 currently for sale on Ebay.fr for around €1300.

I've actually seen one of those silly CD cutters in the wild. Quite expensive. I just stick to washing my CDs in the ultrasonic cleaner so they sound as good as my records.

I can recommend ppl to plow the Accuphase website. Download the product pdf´s. Or just take a trip to a retailer to feel the products for your self. S.MS.L doesnt compare to this, just like MG´s dont compare to Ferrari´s. Even though modern EV can match 0-60.
Accuphase are limited production, over engineered, handmade luxury objects. S.M.S.L is a repackaged computer cd drive.

It doesnt make the S.M.S.L a bad product though. Im gonna get one myself, but if I had the dough I would certainely buy something that has.. an extended pride of ownership, longevity and craftsmanship.

Just check out this product, the Voicing EQ: DG-68 First introduced in 1997  Also take a look at proprietary HS-link, digital over RJ-45. So a Accuphase is a very serious contender.
People, you draw your own EQ curves with a stylus on a touch screen….

Absolute game changer

CD K2 HD, 24bits 100kHz, 99.9999% Silver with black edges were almost as good as vinyl, especially when played in that Accuphase :p

Just own one of this species, and it's 'We Get Requests', and still have to admire this, as it is the most revealing mastering I've ever heard, compared to different mastering on CD as well on Vinyl (even highly priced ones). Maybe marketing, but in this place it was for good.
And others may differ, of course.

In 2016 I found an affordable used one and gave myself a gift... a DP-65V!!
And every time I open the drawer to listen to a CD, well I'm happy I bought it!! ;)View attachment 491277
Nice. But that miniDSP thingy should show some respect and keep a bit more distance! ;)

Awesome review! Question, how do you get the frequency response labels in REW like this? View attachment 491278
You mean the dBr units?
That's after capturing it at the RTA window and viewing it at "SPL and Phase" or "All SPL" window settings unit as dBr.\

If you mean the freq bands, just hit "Controls" at the "SPL and Phase" and check the box.

Having owned Accuphase gear, I KNOW it is great but it does in no way keep its value. That's an illusion. One of them I sold at 50% of the original price (DP-65v CD and DAC) after about 20 years, which is great, but not "keeping its value". The integrated amp (306v) I still own (but keep in storage).

Take the time until it is vintage ...

Honestly, this Master has one of the smallest dynamic range of all versions of this album. It plays very loud and goes over 0dBFS on nearly all tracks. If I remember, that was the principle of that mastering technique, play loud and count of the (efficient for the time) compresser to limit damages.

To my experience, the best CD reissue of this album is the UHQCD one.

The K2HD plays 7dB louder than the UHQCD (again from memory).

Well, 25+ years should qualify. :-D If anyone wants to pay me inflation adjusted $7k (I think that's what it cost in 1999), I am all ears. :-D It's in perfect condition, too.

same cd drive as in the SONY CDP-333ESD & 337

accuphase are a joy to work on, everything is made with the brains turned on while designing.
service hatches, modular construction. like revox / studer
ive had the p102 power amp (fully balanced class-a) a while ago, one of the repairs i liked the most.

It was great to read this review. And the ensuing comments.

I'd wanted Accuphase gear since 1977 when I heard a system comprising a Linn Sondek TT, C-200 pre, 2xP-300 power amps and Gale 401 speakers. I was totally blown away.

When I retired 8 years ago I bought myself a retirement present of a medium level Accuphase system. It cost AU$50k but I haven't for a moment thought it was overpriced. My only regret is not buying the top of the line models which would have cost twice as much. All the Accuphase owners I know feel the same way.

If I'm honest I can't hear a difference between the Accuphase CD player and my Matrix Audio Element X streamer but If I had to get rid of one or the other it would be the Element X that would go.
