A1 Evo Acoustica with X3700H, .ady file, and two subs

Hi folks - hope this is the right spot to ask for help with this. I’ve hit a wall after having just given in and finally spent the $20 on the app to finally get Acoustica working. Was trying without the app and eventually got something to run, but my crossovers were all out of whack so I don’t think I did my REW measurements correctly.

However I am familiar with Audyssey, so I re ran my 8 positions with my X3700H mic and emailed the .ady file to myself. Loaded it up in Acoustica and got the following error:

“Cannot optimize your system without individual measurements for each subwoofer”

Digging into it a bit, looks like there isn’t a “directional” sub mode on the X3700H like there is on the X3800H. What’s the workaround to this? Been searching but it’s tough to track down someone having success with Acoustica with multiple subs and an older AVR like my X3700H who isn’t using REW for their measurements. But I assume someone has done it successfully, right?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Seems like the additional script "ConvertStandard2Directional_2.html" will help me get an .ady file with directional sub measurements for me. Attempting that additional set of measurements, will report back. Not sure how to merge this new .ady with my original .ady file though, hopefully this script takes care of that part too

You did not need the app or manual REW measurements, Acoustica has its own measurement tool (it's in the menu) which uses the Audyssey mic and can measure your subs individually in directional bass mode (including 3700H).

What do you think, is there a big quality difference in measuring manually with Umik-1 and REW versus measuring with Audyssey mic and using your built in Acoustica tool?

If you use a mic stand, center first position properly and keep mic perfectly upright and at ear height all along, you will have great results even with Audyssey mic.

Great to know, thanks! How many measurements do you recommend to take with Acoustica's measurement tool? I've read conflicting opinions around whether the full 8 mic positions the AVR Audyssey calibration flow has are worthwhile or redundant.

And how much do you recommend changing the position of the mic (and should I move it vertically as well) between measurement positions? I think the general consensus is within 24" horizontally and <4" vertically, but would be very interested in what you've found to be the best way to move the mic between measurements (if you move it at all).

Edit: Woah just fired it up and got asked how many measurements, up to 25?! that I want to take. That's pretty awesome, but I can't say I know where to move the mic 24 times to get 25 different measurements.

It depends on room and other variables. I have the 4700H. Have taken hundreds of sets of measurements (8 speakers + 2 subs), mic at varying heights and distance (up to 20" from MLP), and up to 15 positions. But I get my best results from taking only 3 at ear-height from the MLP, which is also the only position I'm interested in.

Interesting, and to clarify, that means you don't move the mic at all between the first, second, and third measurement? Just leave it at the MLP

I assume the three measurements are to help average out random noise fluctuations (HVAC or someone walking around elsewhere in the house or something) between the three measurements? Just getting a better "noise floor" I guess?

Yes. I never move mic now. Used to move all over the place, but it just takes longer and 3MLP measurements seem to yield more detail. Again, YMMV. But worth comparing.
Yes. I usually get measurements so consistent, I'm tempted to measure once. But still get the weird outlier, so stick with multiple measurements to help average them out.

Try the new A1 Evo Express. It's single mic position measurements at the MLP only but with multiple repeats and I threw in a few tricks to eliminate bad sweeps on the fly.

The download file won't open without a password???

Well that was easy! Had to run it twice because I got an REW update message. But otherwise pretty straight forward. So far so good.
