A T VM95ML over Super OM30 to reduce IGD?

Anecdotally I have found Ortofon to be junk relative to the price. 10 times out of 10 I'd take the VM95ML over the OM30, and for the price of a 30 stylus you could get two 95ML stylii.
Oh no you wouldn't!!! :D This from an AT and Ortofon OM30/Super and standard body owner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right, where do I start - all subjective, but that's vinyl for you! First and as said above, IGC can be pre worn on records of unkown heritage. Ortofons when worn, tend to splashiness up top, but that's throughout an entire side. My OM30 which I suspect is middle aged,is clean as a whistle from beginning to end of side...

I started things as a Super OM30 and found the tone a little too lean for my liking (using a V15 III, ADC ZLM and B&O MMC20CL as references). A chap on VE suggested a 'downgrade' to the standard OM body, which can be got on eBay here for twenty quid, as the different characteristics in the coils irrespective of the slit-poles helps with a little extra perceived bass 'weight.' This, it seems to do, I found. Nothing to do with inner groove distortions however, but my own OM30 stylus does seem well behaved from outer to inner side

The VM95E has a nice bass and lower midrange, but that bonded tip and ally cantilever, does seem to close up the sound as the frequencies rise. The ML is huge fun and great value for a cheaper turntable, but it's a bit 'raw' I'd suggest, the cartridge innards starting to show their roots. I *would* suggest a VMx740 however, as the body-innards seem better, giving hopefully more predictable separation figures over way the lop-sided 95 models can be.

Also, the Lowbeats review of the previous VM740 model indicated a slightly gentler presentation over the 540 (which has a plastic mount), which, on past experience of the CS5000, may help the overall sonics (I remember the CS5000 as supplied with a Dual version of an OM pickup, to be a bit 'lean and bright' toned).

So, don't write the OM30 off just yet. May be worth trying a different pressing of a troublesome record to see if it's the same?

(...) and the super om30 did not appear (...)

(...) Lini, according to you what are the drawbacks of heaviers carte with lower compliance? (...)

Well, for one thing, one may run into balance range problems.

And lower compliance very often goes together with higher tracking force and/or reduced trackability, Whether it would also mean, that a higher effective arm mass would be more ideal, would depend on whether the increased body weight would compensate for the reduced compliance or not.

I didn’t call it junk and leave it at that, I wrote it’s junk for the price especially compared to the AT95. Sounds fine on easy records, but struggles with hot ones like 70’s and 80’s hard rock and metal in my experience. Maybe I needed a lighter tonearm or different capacitance but I’m not a fan of playing that matching game which is why I ended up moving to MC carts.
