On Sunday I'll be going to a different type of show. First time I'll be attending.

(Not secure so you may have to click through some nanny warnings depending on your browser)

The Maverick forum is a Hi Fi enthusiasts forum, like ASR, but with less science :)

The show is put on by the forum members. They've reserved an entire hotel for a night or two, and individual forum members are booking rooms in which they will demonstrate their own systems. I'm neither booking a room nor demonstrating gear. I'm viewing it as an opportunity to go see lots of different gear, and chat with people who -as far as I can see - are even madder than we are. Added advantage of it not being filled with scummy sales types trying to sell me stuff at vastly inflated prices that I neither need nor want.

Should be fun.

Did you go? If I'd have seen your post before I would have arranged to meet up, but I was too busy getting everything ready to exhibit. Took my LX521s and managed to get them working really well in a room that was too small theoretically.

It was an outstanding show put together by a group of dedicated enthusiasts, showing everything from Living Voice horns, stacked Quads, reel to reels, even cassettes. Everybody looks out for everyone else, there's a distinct lack of competitiveness and on top of that the show raised more than £8000 for Barnsley Hospice.

I don't think there is anything else quite like it.

I used to exhibit at Scalford, the Maverick's predecessor, and it was huge fun. Playing tunes, talking bollocks and drinking copious quantities of social intoxicants.
Oh, and the spectacle of one exhibitor cutting his horns in half as they wouldn't go through the door. Utterly bonkers.

Indeed, I remember Scalford well and that particular year. The hotel was a rabbit warren with rooms at the end of long corridors or up winding stairs. The joke was that visitors were still wandering around looking for a particular room days after the show had ended.

The Holiday Inn, Barnsley is a model of simplicity room-wise compared to Scalford.

I did - which room were you in? we may have inadvertently met anyway.

I still intend to write a few words on the experience - but it was the best audio show Ive been to.

EDIT : were you 121? If so, you were on my list of rooms to visit, but when I got there it was locked up. For some reason, I didnt find my way back. A shame, I'd have liked to have heard the 521s.

I'll try again next year if you are there :)

Yes I was in 121.

I know what happened. There was a latch on the door that was set to hold to door slightly ajar so visitors could come in, otherwise it locked automatically when it closed. I noticed at one point that the stream of visitors had stopped and sure enough someone on their way out had flipped the latch and locked the door. Seems you were one of those locked out, sorry about that, would have liked to have met you.

Yes, I'll be there next year, whether as a visitor or exhibitor I don't know yet - getting old, as each year passes it gets harder to lug the gear around. :D

Glad you enjoyed the show, it is a good day with a really good vibe.

One of the contributing reasons to why I haven't exhibited for a few years.

Looking at the photos, there was a lack of really large 'speakers, no big Tannoys, IMFs or multi-way horns. Maybe we're all getting that bit older and reluctant to lug large 'speakers around.

Was it last year or the year before where they had a prize for the best 'suitcase' system, i.e. one that could be carried in by one person in a suitcase.

I do vaguely remember the suitcase system, but I don't think it was last year.

The rooms are Holiday Inn standard size bedrooms (20-25sq m. at a guess), so not ideal for larger speakers. But the floors are really solid which helps. And there are two lifts.

But yes, the demographic is certainly still older blokes, although I have noticed more wives/partners coming along the last couple of years. And there is always a sprinking of young people. One father and his twenty something son came into my room several times and showed up again when I was packing up to ask loads of DIY questions as his son is building his first speaker system.

Maybe there is hope for this hobby yet. I do think this show makes hi-fi more accessible for people as they can see and hear real world systems which can only be a good thing.

My thoughts on the show (and some pictures)

The participants mix across the scale of audiophiles, from ASR style objectivists (probably the minority) to the extreme end of subjectivism. But there will be no disparaging of the latter from me. Regardless of the approach, the exhibitors are universally passionate about their hobby, and friendly and welcoming as you could want. They are after all investing at least a few hundred notes just to show the fruits of their passion to like minded people.

As a result - it was an opportunity to experience systems of all types and sizes. Valve amplification and unnecessarily large turntables - were, as you might expect, not in short supply. I also saw one reel to reel tape recorder, and one rooms sole source was a fully restored and calibrated (£900 value in the restoration alone) Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck.

At the other end of the scale was a pair of home built 4 way speakers. MiniDSP flex 8 for crossover/DSP and 4 fosi amps to power them (3xV3s, and one ZA3), and a Raspberry pi streamer running Picoreplayer. There were also some Wiim streamers around.

One mad individual was showing all homebuilt.... Tube based DAC (actual DAC was chip based, not tubes, obv, but external electronics was tube), Tube Preamp, and Tube power amp. Now that is dedication to a hobby.

Speakers ranged from a tiny home built "Soundblab" design to 4x Quad ESL (I think) 57 electrostatics. The latter were in a room run by a small uk audio company NVA Audo. There were also some B&O Beolab 5 speakers in another dealer room (I think these were the only 2 dealers present) that sounded pretty good. But then they should for £7K

What delighted me:
1 - Every room sounded different
2 - Sound quality bore no (non zero nada) correlation to size/cost/complexity/ visual impressiveness of the system. I am convinced 90% of sound quality at the show was down to speakers and room interactions. It was certainly not possible to hear a "tube sound" or an "analogue sound" or a "tape" sound (from the reel to reel eg). Or even Cassette tape weaknesses - All such differences were lost in the overall (speaker/room?) sound variations.
3 - Despite huge and expensive setups being in the majority (Eg dual tube power amps, huge turntables and massive speakers) I would say my relatively modest AVR amplified and small floor standers with sub system beat at least 75% of those I heard for sound quality. The reason (iMO) is DSP/room correction. Without exception, the best sounding rooms were all using some sort of DSP. Many or most of those that didn't (regardless of cost/complexity, analogue purity or digital perfection etc) all suffered from what I've battled most of my life "pre DSP" : Flabby bass, wooly "smeary" sound, lack of clarity (sorry for the subjective descriptions here but I need some to try to describe what I was hearing)
4 - An auction of some audio gear during which many visitors put their hands in their pockets (up to nearly £2K in a couple of instances) to bid for items, with all proceeds (items were donated by members and a couple of local businesses) going to Barnsley Hospice. That, together with a raffle, contributions from the bring and buy sale, and some other things raised a total of about £8400 for the hospice.
5 - Those aforementioned home built Soundblab wave guide speakers. As I walked into the room, there were two small speakers, and so much bass, I was looking around for the subs. There weren't any. All the sound was coming from 2 small (around 10cm x 30cm x 30cm) speakers. They blew me away.

What didn't delight me?
Pretty much nothing. Except a 1 1/2 hour drive to get there.

I will be going next year again.

The Scalford and subsequent Wam shows were all excellent events, the highlight of my HiFi year.
I was going to go to this and stay Saturday night for the BS and beer but couldn't make it because of other commitments.
Everybody very passionate and as you say intriguing how good a sound can be had from a modest system.

Thanks Ant.
Great reporting. Sounds like the British mini Burning Man for audio buffs without any fires, I hope. :)
