A Normal August 1st

I doubt you had 50% relative humidity when the temperature was 106. That means a dew point of 84 and, as you said, a heat index of 137. That would be extraordinary and newsworthy.

My outside weather sensor showed 49% humidity. The Weather Channel website showed 51% here. I'm currently showing 89F with 72% humidity and TWC is showing 72%.

It is always humid here in the summer. A lot of lakes and ponds around here.

As I said, it was a normal August 1st here. These temperatures and humidity are like this every August. Not newsworthy at all. July was cooler than normal.

Here's the forecast for the next several days. Note the "Hot and humid". It almost always says that. Going to be cooler today, high of only 99F and expected humidity of 58%.

The highest heat index ever recorded for the state of Oklahoma is about 127-128, from what I've read. Your claim of a heat index of 137 would shatter all time state records and would be the highest recorded anywhere in the country this year.

I know it gets hot and humid there, but it doesn't get *THAT* hot and humid.

The humidity of 58% probably doesn't happen at the same time as the temperature peak of 99F.

the higher the humidity the higher the apparent temperature. eg in Samoa when its 90% humid the apparent temperature hits 111F and I feel like I am gonna die.

I don't know your location exactly, but Hugo, Oklahoma has a forecast WBGT tomorrow of 92 degrees which is into the black category around 1 pm. A heat index of 109 is forecast. Tomorrow or today now is expected cooler than was yesterday. But it is hot any day it gets into the black category.

Forecast high of 79F (26C) here today. 109F (43C) back in AZ.

I do not miss that weather.

Forecast for Phoenix is 110 F tomorrow, but the WBGT is predicated at 91F. So no hotter on that count than southeastern Oklahoma. That is if you are outdoors and working actively. Both are hot. Uncomfortably hot. Dangerously hot.

Phoenix has a double whammy- besides the desert location, they've created a classic urban heat island.

It's a great place, quite beautiful, but for me, unlivable. Yet lots of people love it.

When I lived in The Netherlands a long time ago, I'd usually use an ice scraper to clear the windscreen and often had to get in through the boot if the door locks were frozen up. I recall getting off the train one evening and the temp sign said -14C.

I needed more than an ice scraper for this, my Mk2 VW Golf GTI is under there

Southeast Oklahoma close to the Arkansas border and Fort Smith, Arkansas. Hills and mountains, lots of forests, lakes and ponds. Nothing like western Oklahoma.

So that would really put you close to eastern Oklahoma almost halfway on the state line. Hugo is down near the Texas border near the Arkansas corner. Or it seems looking at maps. Obviously you know where you are and I've never quite been in OK, but close in Arkansas.

I've never quite been in OK

Oklahoma!

I had to visit Oklamoma a week at a time for a few months.

Down in Texas I had a nice corner cubicle facing the wall of windows facing the pond facing my parking spot with a corner door right there and home only a mile or two away, then things "changed" and I had to fly to Tulsa every Monday morning to drive to Owasso to the big big WorldCom engineering site.

I didn't like who became "in charge of me" and every Monday he would announce me late for the morning meeting (no way I was going to fly up Sunday night).

Owasso is a little north of Tulsa, and in the local indian dialect it means "The end of the trail".

Theres a famous statue:

Created by American-born sculptor James Earle Fraser (1876–1953), End of the Trail, a representation of an American Indian on horseback, has endured to become one of the most recognizable images in the United States.
And it was "the end of the trail".

I left the company, and soon after the whole thing folded in an accounting scandal.

I discovered Pickle Bars at the local restaurants, so it wasn't a complete waste.

Went from there to Nortel, which I blowed up real good too!

NEC, my other "real job" employer, never did very well in the U.S., so I decided to retire and not crash any other Multinational Intercontinental Conglomerates by my presence in their payroll.

My last paycheck was in September 2002.

Don't miss it all one bit, though the expense account and a lot of the travel was nice, so I had that going for me.
